Value of Epic kit

By Wolfshead, in X-Wing

Is it just me or does the Epic Battles expansion seem rather expensive for what you get? 64 cards, two sheets of tokens, a rule-book, and 5 small bits of plastic (handles for the wing tools). Is that worth $25.00?

One of the cardboard sheets is mostly bits for the scenarios. 5 pages of the rule-book covers the wings and the rest is scenario rules and 11 scenarios.

I do like the wings and look forward to using them. The scenarios are a bit more meh. While I do like the idea of breaking out of the 200 point head to head, I have to wonder once the first rush passes, how often these will actually be played. Are they planning to have official events and/or tournaments using these?

Epic really isn’t aimed at the official event market...

They will be used as as often as you and another person who doesn’t want to play yet another 200/6 game.

My disappointment with it is the lack of linked scenarios, I like the idea of mini-campaigns with a storyline to play through. On the other hand, I’m more than happy to make my own with the tools provided.

To answer your main point though, whether or not it is worth it depends how you use it. If you aren’t going to play the format then it’s totally not worth it. If you’re going to meet up with your friends and have a big game from time to time then it’s totally worth it. Let me put it back to you, what would you like to have seen in the epic set to make it ‘worth’ $25?

That's what it costs, I guess. If you want to play epic, you kind of have to get it. Besides, are there all that many other games where you get all that much more than 64 cards and a pile of cardboard for $25?

I was really pleased to get a set of consecutive ID tokens, because converting to Second Edition, I only had 1-6, 10, 13, & 14. That bothered me! Now I have 1-24, and it just feels better.

As to the main content, I get the impression that a lot of hours went into developing and testing the new wing rules and the scenarios. That's not cheap. Looking at the $15-20 card packs, I'd say $25 is great for what you get.

I am going to find an Epic play group and try to get as much use out of these new components as I can. And the fact that the Epic Battles Rules Reference has a glossary of scenarios makes me think they fully intend on future scenarios (and probably campaigns).

I'm excited for Epic and the future of Epic!

but doesn't one epic box support multiple players?

unlike most kits it's not something everyone at the table needs

It can, unless it's a very high point game and you're running 3 full Wings. That said, most of the contents are in support of the various scenarios. So in that regard, yeah it supports multiple players at once.

That sounds heavenly.

What would be acceptable to you?

people seriously underestimate the cost of punchboard and cards.

(and artists and layout designers and game design and marketing and shipping and distribution)

And then you notice those consecutively numbered ID tokens are color coded and match up to the Wing ID cards. Me, I have 1-6, 8 (twice), and 10 (5 of them for my CR-90).

Ah, flashing back to those wonderful squadron call ins. “Red two standing by.”

Amusingly, the Red wing ID cards/ID tokens are numbered 19-24. Numbers 1-6 are white.

Yeah but... I mean... the call signs...

Aw dang it.

I know, they missed an opportunity here.

Perhaps if you are unwilling to spend $25 to give your hobby a whole new dimension you are in the wrong hobby?

As in, 100% of the time.

I'm hoping a Campaign Set is still in the offing.

It will take longer to produce, and a set like this will off some insightful feed back before a larger project like that.

Also, it becomes a step-up product from this product, to keep interest piqued.

Flashbacks to high school now. Just give the little guy the ball and then... uh, guys? Wait a minute... can’t we talk about this?

It is worth $25 just to have on the shelf if I might want to play it. Sixty card MtG decks are in the $14.95 range with just cards, no fancy plastic bits.

And just consider how much you can pay for models that are only good for looking at once put together. A paper model of the white house can cost you $250. A paper model of a torii gate can cost you $19 if you have to cut the pieces out of the sheets, or $28 if they are pre-cut. And if that's not proof enough for you, you can easily pay $25 for plain cardboard .

Yeah, seem about right to me.

But, I feel like epic play, scenarios, etc., are going to be my new standard

I hope I can find people with that same mentality here in Maryland.

Even if only one other person is willing to do 500+ point games with me, I'd consider Epic Battles a good buy. In addition to the scenarios listed in the booklet, I believe the Epic Battles box's components would also allow you to run the various 1.0 scenarios too.

Just that FFG puts out something that is not 200/3 deathmatch 1 on 1, is awesome.

Reason enough to buy it, so that FFG sees there is demand for scenarios and campaigns!

The best thing was 1st edition target locks. It ended up turning into a sort of weird game of scrabble.

Including at least one player I know who took a rather twisted glee in spelling out threats, insults and so forth with target locks when using a long range scanners bomber squadron.

Watching the word K AB OO M materialise next to a player's most valuable ace in the first turn was surprisingly good at undermining people's confidence.

1st ed locks are much better nicer than 2nd ed. just for feel and grok haha.

The best TL I used was a Salt and Pepper packet pair. Salt for Red. Pepper for Blue. Made ppl MAD.
