Frequently used upgrades

By Jedirev, in Star Wars: Legion

So, my upgrade card pack arrived today and I've just done reorganizing my folder... so many Targeting Scopes!

Got me thinking: what upgrade cards would/have you used 5 or more times in a list?

I assume you mean all in a single list, not over the entire time we've played legion?

Hmm...

For comms, there's HQ Uplink- It's very powerful when spammed, although Linked Targetting Array has given it some competition (or synergy, if Shoretroopers and emplacements are involved)

Gear: Recon Intel, especially when combined with Rex.

Those are the only two slots that are really "spammable," unless you count Personnel and Heavy Weapons upgrades on corps units, and those don't feel comparable. So, yeah, I don't think there are too many upgrades that you really need that many copies of except for unit specific ones like Heavy Weapons.

Obviously. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I've seen Frag grenades taken on 5+ units for the close range surge to crit/red dice. Synergises well with the Z-6, Snowtrooper Flamethrower, or any other means of rolling lots of dice.

But in general I feel certain upgrades work best on certain units, and after a certain point I'd rather spend the points on another unit rather than upgrades.

Edit: But having spares is useful for loaning cards out, trading with other players, or if you want to be able to store armies with the upgrade cards so you don't have to dig for them the next time you field that army.

There’s really only the obvious upgrades in Gear, Grenades & Comms that get spammed that much. It’s a shame about targeting scopes. I still haven’t even seen one being used since it’s price reduction. It probably should have been dropped to 3 points to at least put it on par with Environmental Gear, and even then it may still get over looked.

I agree. Targeting scopes is in a bit of an awkward spot since it only triggers if you have an Aim token, which frequently means costing an action in addition to the 4 points. If I have 4 points to spend on upgrades, I'd probably add two Recon Intels, since it is 2 points of upgrade that always triggers (excepting if the unit is deployed via Rapid Reinforcements I think?).

At 3 points, it still competes with Environmental Gear and Grappling Hooks, both of which are dependant on table terrain, but don't require a token on the unit to activate. Again, I'd probably take Recon Intel and 1 point for bid over Targeting Scopes without a reliable way to hand out Aim. If Targeting Scopes instead just gave you a single die re-roll, regardless of aim token expenditure then we'd see it stapled to a few units, like snipers, so that's probably not the best way to balance it either...

I used to use tons of grenades. But I found they never got within range 1 until there's only a couple people left in the squad anyways.

Recon Intel, for a non-unit specific upgrade. Probably nothing else besides heavy weapons gets that level of love. I want to like Targeting scopes, but it's still too expensive.

I started using Targeting Scopes with Bossk and Shoretroopers. Both get a lot of mileage out of the extra die reroll.

That makes sense, especially since both have cheap/easy ways to gain Aim tokens without an action being spent.

Yeah. Bossk landed 5 crits on Obiwan my last game. Targeting Scopes, and 5 lying in wait activations. 😃

Evo Gear (7/9 on my current lists)

Overwatch (5/9 on my invader league list)

Comms relay: normally 3-5 in every imperial list I build

Seems like a lot, even if you're using 3 mortars.

I guess 3 mortars, and a couple of Deathtroopers to bounce a Krennic Entourage?

Yes sir!
