Hey peeps - I wanted to share the details of a conversation I had with Evan Johnson, the Marketing Manager from Fantasy Flight Games. Evan reached out to me a couple of days ago, with the intent of increasing the communication between FFG and the Legion Community. I focused my questions down to 5 specific areas - which I will copy here for you to read! Hopefully you enjoy what you see!

#1 - Updates on Delays: Alright, so this is one that Matt has been addressing but could still use some improvement. For example, the community still has no idea when Dewbacks (who had to be repacked due to incorrect base sizes) will be released, other than "soon". The problem was identified in August and their release was delayed, but an update would be great. The mystical paint set to match that you partnered with Army Painter to produce is another good example. The same thing goes for releases that happen early, like Rex and Count Dooku which were announced for Q1 2020, but are now coming out on the 15th of this month. Any reason why they were pushed up? We would love to know that kind of stuff too!

Answer: Dewback Riders have actually just finished the repack, and the Dewback Rider Unit Expansion is shipping out from our warehouse now. Once products ship out from our warehouse, the release dates are pretty solid, so we’re looking at having the Dewback Riders wide release on November 22. Paint set with Army Painter is still happening, and I have it on good authority that it should release on Black Friday, November 29. This is not yet locked in, as it has not yet shipped from our warehouse, but we’re close and we should know for certain early next week. Regarding Count Dooku and Rex, the distribution and sales unit simply saw an opportunity to move these releases up. Sorry I can’t get too much into that one, it really just comes down to “business reasons.”

#2 - General transparency on release dates: So this one is sort of addressed above, but we would like to see an increase in hard date announcements from FFG. The only time we get a hard date is from the Spanish website - the upcoming page on the English website is largely noted as useless, with the only good warning being "shipping now". Getting hard dates from FFG, rather than random store owners online (which can get real messy) would be awesome.

Answer: For sure. We’ve historically been hesitant to give release dates since products commonly move around quite a bit. However, I can give you an expected release month for every announced product, with the caveat that these things can change. So don’t place money on any of these or anything like that!

- Count Dooku / Rex – November 15

- Dewback Rider – November 22

- Legion Paints – November 29 (tentative)

- Upgrade Expansions, Luke Skywalker / Darth Vader Operatives, Imperial Bunker, Crashed Escape Pod – December

- Phase II Clones, B2 Super Battle Droids, AAT, TX-130 - February

#3 - Continued spotlight on the Development team: I mentioned this in discord, but please please continue to get Luke, Alex, and the rest of the team out there whenever possible. One of my favorite parts of this past worlds was getting to talk to Derrick about sculpting, and I think a focus on the unsung heros of this game would certainly get a positive reception. I know the podcasters would love to set up interviews, but something that comes straight from FFG would also be well received.

Answer: Yeah, I’m happy to help set up interviews, and we’ll get them in the channel mentioned below in #4.

#4 - Some sort of bi-weekly engagement between FFG reps and the discord community would also be very well received. We set up an "FFG relations" channel between the admins and the reps with an FFG tag (Matt, Luke, Derrick). I think this avenue might be a great one to get questions answered quickly and efficiently between you and the wider community. More important, if you want to put something out early, you can hand that over to an admin and we can announce for you.

Answer: I love this idea, and I think I’m going to suggest that we do something similar with the other Discord channels that I’m reaching out to. This would really help facilitate future communication. In the future, I would love if I can just post information like I’m sharing in #1 and #2 and get it out to all the admins simultaneously for further dissemination.

(Note - this conversation was had with Discord in mind. There is no reason why we wouldn't share anything with the Facebook / Reddit / FFG Forum community as well!

#5 - The opposite of #3: Can we put some focus back on the players, creative minds, and leaders of the community that help make Legion an exciting group to be a part of? I believe interviews and other spot light type articles have happened before, and more in this vein would be an awesome way to acknowledge people that put so much love into this game.

Answer: This would be great to do! The only reason we haven’t really done this is a lack of knowledge on who to reach out to. Happy to work with doing interviews of prominent players / tournament winners, spotlights on interesting lists, well-painted armies, etc.

I had permission from Evan to share everything above with this community. Please feel free to disseminate far and wide - and be on the lookout for more as we continue to develop this relationship with FFG! And thanks again to everyone for being great!

I saw that last night. Great to actually start getting some info from FFG. Odd that we're not getting anything in January, but I'll take Dooku and Rex early if that means nothing then.

I suspect the one of the December items, likely the bunker and R2+3PO end up getting pushed to January.

January could also be slated for a yet unannounced product, possibly SWL59 and SWL60.

SWL59: https://elementgames.co.uk/new-releases/star-wars-legion-cassian-andor-and-k-2s0-commander-expansion

SWL60: https://elementgames.co.uk/new-releases/star-wars-legion-iden-versio-and-dio-commander-expansion

According to online retailer, due in April (which I take with a tablespoon of salt).

If there's an unannounced product due for January, personally I hope it's another release for CW to accelerate the increase in options.

In their Q&A they said they were switching from 6 to 8 releases. Which means most likely we are switching to a wave release in the middle of each quarter. Two units a month would not really work with 4 factions rotating and stuff coming out on February, May, August, and November would also allow X-wing to keep their end of the quarter release dates. We will not be 100% sure if this is what they are doing until we see what they have for 2020 Q2, but its a decent guess.

  • 2019 Q4 8 units: bunker, Luke, Vader, escape pod, and 4 weapon packs
  • 2020 Q1 February: B2, Phase II, 2 tanks, and the two mystery units. Dooku/Rex was probably "we are sorry about the Clone Wars screw up so here you go" and was removed from this wave so we will only be getting the six.

Sure we won't get something every month, but their rotation system I found to not the best and in the long run we get more stuff!

Until Clone Wars is fully "caught up," there's no reason in my opinion to try to "fully support" all 4 factions, Empire and Rebels would be fine with significantly less frequent releases, like only one a quarter so Rebels and Imperials can get any new cards without buying kits outside of faction. Trying for grouped quarterly releases is not really "better" for catching up. X-Wing second edition is much more "balanced" in the actual expansions released for the factions, not including the cards from the conversion set and first edition sets.

That also doesn't work with the (potentially incorrect) date on the listings I linked, with an April release date on the (not at all mystery) units, since the middle of Q2 is May. As to the "mystery:" multiple unofficial sources at this point have Cassian and Iden as the upcoming releases.

It could be that the Heavies or Corps were originally slated for January, but due to some "delay" are now expected in February.

Oh I agree that Clone Wars should be getting all 8 units a quarter for at least a few waves, but FFG does not apparently lol. The bunker is a waste of a slot (its nice, but pricey) and the weapon packs also do not help Clone Wars who needs different units (I want those aliens for Rebels tho). R2/3P0 are fine and helps GAR, but CIS needs some love!! We are getting 4 units for Empire/Rebel, 2 for Clone Wars, and 2 neutral ones, ouch!

Really this is all guessing since it seems like FFG have been having issues since they released The Clone Wars box set. I guess they could be sticking to two packs a month of non stop Clone Wars, but they just throw two units of Empire/Rebel in there as well to balance. I just find it interesting that they are doing 8 packs in December, 4 in February, and they started to talk about waves in the Q&A. I am not sure which way would be better or preferred, I just want to know a clear order or at least a timetable. Dooku and Rex are coming out in 9 days I would have never know if I did not stalk the forums.

The Cassian/Iden announcement will be their big hint at future plans. Will it be Q2 or Q1, 6 or 8 a quarter, and will we get something every month? Stay tuned and find out!!

I’m honestly at the point where I’ve ceased to care too much. I try to budget what I can, but when the release dates have been so wildly off I sort of gave up. I’ve got my rebel and empire armies with incomplete collections, but little motivation to go back and collect the missing from 2019. I have double core set worth of clones to paint right now, so I have a lot of hobby time without spending more money coming up (and my rebel veterans are still WIP). I may pick up named characters over time, and I do want to nab the rebel trooper heavy for the aliens.

The release schedule here is perhaps too late for me. We’ll see how it progresses (also, I just need to find time to host some games...)

I'm with the scummy rebel. I have over 800 points painted for both sides so what do I care? Unless it's a new Hoth figure, or Lando, I won't pay much attention. Though Cassian could be in his Han Solo parka, in which case I'll watch his release date closely!

Yup, I’ve lost my drive to keep up with the Joneses. I’d rather have the stuff I have where I can run a game myself if necessary and just have friends play casually. Games are too long for a tournament game to me. Rather not be in a rush with meta analysis this and that.

Maybe if I was still only doing one faction that would be viable, but I’m not.

I think my only must haves are Rex, the rebel heavy weapons for the aliens, and maybe the clone tank so I have some actual impact for that army. I could be tempted by other heroes we don’t know about yet (especially republic ones), and I probably will pick up at least a few other unannounced republic options of SF or other support variety.

But I mean, I have rebel units that haven’t seen the board yet. And imperials that have only been played once because game time was limited this year. If I didn’t just enjoy painting them all so much I’d have quit by now.

Good news that FFG is finally figuring out how to market correctly.

It is a shame that we won't be seeing much CW diversity for quite awhile though. Probably won't get any more new units until around April / May aswell.

Wait, you saw the Feb section right?

Legion has had "waves" since it was released, so it's nothing new to see the term floated around. Releasing in waves is a different story, and I don't recall anything from the Q&A saying they were going in that direction. Waves doesn't really match up with this schedule, as we have releases for October, November, December, February, and possibly April. The missing month makes sense with the bumped up CW commanders.

Going from 6 to 8 releases a quarter actually makes sense for the CW releases, as they can do 3 pairs of CW releases, and then, once a quarter, do a single GCW pair. This allows for all factions to grow, but doesn't slow down the CW growth.

That's not new stuff. We've had access to those rules for 7 months......

Most of them. The tank upgrades are still unknown.

And the stats/points for all the heavies.

Also check the full quote - Evan mentioned something being announced soon for March.

Wait what? They were announced at GenCon. We’ve had access to them for 3 months. And only partially at that. We don’t know the points for the heavy weapons or much about hardpoints for the tank.

And if just knowing the rules for a new thing is what you’re after, there’s virtually no chance that you’ll have to wait until April of next year... I’m sure we’ll see some announcements soon.

If anyone has the opportunity to talk to FFG directly again, please ask why articles are so infrequent, even when we are expecting a release? It just seems like something has changed in the last few months and we don’t get articles like we used to. Did someone get fired or quit, or just reassigned?

We don’t really know that is what FFG agreed with or didn’t. We do know that Lucas Film contacted FFG and said they wanted GCW content released ASAP. FFG tried to comply without causing problems with CW rollout, but it looks like they were unsuccessful. Just to be fair.

Let me rephrase. We've had access to them since early August. It will be 7 months until they are actually released.

You can estimate heavy weapon costs pretty easily and probably be off about 10 points.

There is a lot of information still left out for the vehicles, but I've already been playing against the AAT base and it's pretty powerful due to Barrage. I haven't tried the GAR counterpart because I value clone bodies.
