General inspiration

By ValdoP, in Game Masters

Hi there,

I chose Edge of Empire sor it's modern game mechanics but quite frankly I have little interest in the star wars setting. I'm more a fan of space opera, far space exploration, dirty space station, new worlds etc.

I'd be very interested in ideas and inspiration from books, other rpgs (from traveller to gurps to anything) that build on these sort of settings. I'd suggest for instance Jack Vance, the Demon Princes or Emphyrio. For comics I love Laureline and Valerian, some books have been translated such as World Without Stars , Welcome to Alflolol and Heroes of the Equinox.

Any ideas? I tried to have a look at fan's pages but there are so many and I cannot read the campaign logs, neither work nor family will let me have the time.

Thanks

I recommend you the Genesys. Uses the same, but refined mechanics and the setting is whatever you want it to be.

NINJA'D!!!

Hmmm like the mechanics but no the setting?.... use the basis first - Cowboys and Indians and Samurai in space... but you don't like the SW setting..

so go for New World Settlers in Space... start small with your own system.. try to find the Warhammer 40K galactic map.. remove all references to THAT game and scribble on your own... choose a beginning sector and have that as YOUR 'hard' sci fi ultra high tec galactic central.

Google anything related to Traveller and if you find old school traveller pdfs *whispers* (download them)... I remember MAAAANY years ago a White Dwarf article about Bounty Hunters and a ship floor plan for traveller:

Dunno.. tbh I used to have that mind set 'I love the rule set but dislike the setting, I'll write my own' nowadays with marriage and kids and career I don't have the time.... so I just find a setting and system I like and roll with... 5E D&D with Forgotten Realms/Dark Sun setting... in fact we're having a crack at SW d6 starting next week!!! Go figure!! :D

Hope my ideas work for you ;)

This. Except with a site like https://www.drivethrurpg.com , $5 can get you a treasure-trove, and then you know you didn't rip somebody off. Search for Traveller and there are a ton of great resources available, most of which are pretty mechanics-agnostic, or are easily reskinned.

And once you do that, yes, switch to Genesys. There is even a near-future spin-off game (Android, Shadow of the Beanstalk) that uses those mechanics that could be easily be used for whatever sci-fi setting you like.

A very good taste, indeed. If you can read french take a look at Mega 5e Paradigme . It's the 5th edition a RPG that was first published in 1984 and which is directly inspired by the Comic Valérian Agent Spatio-temporel.
