WFRP3 Book Bindings Query

By deathmarch, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hi there everybody! This is my first post and I'm glad to finally be taking my first step in participating in the forums.

I am currently thinking about getting into WHRP3, but I'm concerned about what others have mentioned on the WHRP forums about the rulebook bindings not holding up and pages falling out of them without any or much effort. What I wanted to know was is this a widespread problem or is it just a small amount of books that are having this problem, and is it only the core rulebook or a number of the rulebooks in the core set? Also, for those people who sent away for a replacement rulebook because of the binding issue, has the replacement book fallen apart also, or has it remained intact and is the binding good? Lastly, has anyone had any problems with the bindings for the GMs Toolkit book and the campaign book for 'The Gathering Storm'?

I'm sorry for so many questions about the book bindings, but I'm a person who likes to buy products in mint condition and keep them that way so that I may have a lot of enjoyment from them for many years. If this is going to be a problem with the books for WHRP3, then I may just have to give the game a miss - something that I don't want to particularly do as I'm really excited about experiencing this roleplaying game, and I love the warhammer fantasy world setting. I'll appreciate all the feedback I can get as it will help me to make an informed decision. Thanks.

My books have seen a good deal of use between myself and four players, and there's not a hint of weakness or loose pages. Note that I was careful to fold the covers at the crease near the spine as I'm told this takes some stress off the binding. It doesn't answer all your questions but I hope it helps your decision.

I've not had any issues so far. I also like to keep things in good condition and so I'm careful with the books. One thing that was recommended to me with the WFRP books was to fold the cover back along its crease line (front and back) to reduce pressure on the binding. However, just being careful with your books (not leaving them open and face down, not bending the covers back on themselves, etc.) should see you all right.

+1.

Except I printed Bestiary pages from Tome of Adventure's PDF to unharm that book. Otherwise these pages would have been too many times opened with some weight on it and I think it would have shown signs of weakness.

I intended to do the same and purchased the .pdf of the ToA as well. But I never actually got around to printing many of the pages out. The book's seen a fair amount of use during play and hasn't shown any signs of stress yet.

No problems with the bindings on my books, don't let this concern stop you from getting a truly excellent game.

I also broke the crease on the covers near the binding before using them. My books have seen heavy use and show no signs of wear at all. I'm careful with them though.

No problem here, either, and I own two core sets. Neither of my players who also own core sets have had any problem. Just crease as everyone has said. Remember, too, that you're way less likely to be using the books as often as you might for other RPGs because so much of the info is on the cards and sheets.

How exactly do you "break the crease"?

This I find is key to the general softcover bindings we have in games these days. Aside from WFRP, GW Army books / codexes are the same binding. I have found that if you do as above, you books tend to last longer. If not then you book stends to start fallinig apart.

If you look on the outside cover, near the binding, you'll see a vertical factory created crease. Use your fingers and pin down the outside of the binding, then fold the cover back till it bends at the crease. Be sure and keep the binding pinned down so the cover doesn't pull away from the binding. Once you bend it back (along the crease), bend it all the way flat and run your finger down the crease (on the inside of the cover/fold) to bend it all the way.

Do this front and back.

Now, when you open the book, the cover will bend back. The cover is stiff and can force itself away from the glue (wrecking the binding) if you don't fold it back first.

Hi again everyone! Thanks to all of you who provided feedback - I greatly appreciate it!

I think that I will end up purchasing WFRP. Also, I happened to find some other RPG books of mine that are perfect bound that I'd totally forgotten about and which are still in perfect condition without my having done anything to the binding crease on the cover. I guess this is because I don't open my books up very wide and they haven't had any heavy use - I'm also psycotic about how I treat my books!

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of the core boxed set, and once again, thanks everyone for taking the time to answer my questions and helping me with deciding whether or not to buy WFRP. Have a great week.

The two of us who purchased the main game have pages that are coming out of the main rulebook. Its the most used book we have that gets passed around, and the binding is pretty weak, though we haven't had issue with the other books for some reason.

Just out of interest, did you fold them along the creases when you first got them? I'm just trying to get a feel for the durability of these books.

I realize this is an old post but after dealing with a few loose pages from my core books, I think it's time to get them replaced or somehow rebind it all back up. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get these books either replaced, or have tips to get these books from a loose stack of paper back to an actual book?

The skill pages from my core book are loose. I taped them. Of course we don't even use that anymore though because we now have the player's guide.

Have you had trouble with the guides at all?

jh

I only own the core set currently, but I may pickup the full book eventually, I'd just like to keep and use the individual books for other people to reference and or take home with them. It just seems sad that well printed books in an expensive set ended up having such a poor bindings.

Fixed the pages good with a big power stapler we have at work. Who knew we had an entire closet of book-binding materials and equipment?

My core softback book lost a section of pages in only week one of ownership. :( I will probably end up taping the section back in.

Thanks for the suggestion on creasing the covers, will do that for all of my softbacks now.
