Cad Bane + Pattern Analyzer

By BobaFett009, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Got a question not sure if this was posted or not. Let’s say l am playing with Zuvio with Cad Bane crew and Pattern Analyzer. Can use both Bane’s ability and a red manuver using the pattern analyzer?

No. Cad Bane's ability triggers during the System Phase after a device is dropped or launched and does not add the Boost action to the ship's Action Bar. Pattern Analyzer is used during the Execute Maneuver step of the Activation Phase just before the Check Difficulty portion of Executing the Maneuver. Since you're already stressed thanks to Cad Bane when you reveal your dial (first step of the Activation Phase) you're forced to execute a White 2 Straight maneuver instead of the red maneuver selected (per the 4th bullet point in the "Additionally:" part of "Maneuver" on page 13 of the Rules Rreference).

To be clear, he doesn't specifically only trigger during the system phase. That is just when he would typically trigger. If, however, some ability for scum was released that worked similar to Paige or Deathfire (allowing dropping outside of the system phase), he could trigger from that as well.

I know you know that and were only responding to the ops specific scenario, but wanted to point that out for everyone else, for clarity.

:D there ya go

To be further clear, even though both "Genius" and Pattern Analyzer start off with the "After you fully executed a maneuver" timing (and would logically be able to be ordered by player choice) it is common consensus that without further context clues "after fully executing a maneuver" includes the Check difficulty step. Because of that, the only way to stack Cad Bane's boost with Pattern Analyzer is with a device that is dropped/launched by an Action header, which I don't recall being a thing yet. That or an ability to get rid of the stress after your maneuver.

With "Genius" or something like Paige you would still be unable to take that boost after the red maneuver because you will be stressed and Cad lacks the "even while stressed" clause for the boost action.

... I'll start a new topic to question why "after fully executing a maneuver" is different for PA than every other upgrade.

These 2 combined is why I didn't include Genius in my explanation.

Nope. PA is " While you execute", not After. So PA triggers before Genius. But you are right that using all 3 wouldn't synergize.

But also, i wasnt suggesting Genius be combined with PA or Cad, only that Cad isn't limited to the System Phase.

If you have a card that allows you to perform actions or red maneuvers while stressed you can combine them.
For example with contraband cybernetics, or if you somehow had two tech slots you could also have primed thrusters(together with "genius").

In that case, though, you wouldn't need the Pattern Analyzer effect, though it would be a nice way to gain an additional action. Consider a ship that could equip Cad Bane, Genius, Pattern Analyzer, Contraband Cybernetics, and a bomb (say Proton Bomb):

  1. Trigger Contraband Cybernetics before you activate.
  2. Reveal and execute a red maneuver (like a 4-speed Koiogran Turn)
  3. Use Pattern Analyzer to barrel roll into position.
  4. Check Difficulty Step gives you one stress.
  5. Genius now drops the Proton Bomb .
  6. Cad Bane lets you perform a red boost (for another stress).
  7. Finally, your Perform Action Step lets you do something (focus is probably the only thing left on your bar at this point ;) ).\

At least there doesn't appear to be any ships that can handle that particular loadout (honestly, are there even any scum ships that can take both an astromech AND a crew? Or any ship at all?)

In S&V no. At all? The Resistance Transport.

Oh believe me I've looked, and no. Every scum ship that is able to take a crew but have a title that gives them astromech also removes the crew slot when you do so(J5k, Scurrg).

I looked because I wanted to have Qi'ra and an R3.

Also ARC-170 and Sheathipede.
