Ok so I noticed the wording is different from the WAB card. As I read the objective, the defending ships also get extra damage.

My opponent chose the hull zone but that crit is basically an extra dmg on the defender in the worst scenario (obstacle given).

Correct, it doesn't say "another" so the defender is included.
