I'd say to paint the lines first with a fine brush. When they look nice go to carefully paint the panels without undo the lines, taking advantage of the relief. You can try on yours, but you will need to correct the panels.

Your white lines look good, I'm not sure why you feel they're not good enough.

Use the side of your brush to paint the white on. You could try a roller (called a brayer,) but getting one that small is cost prohibitive.

Do they end up feeling sticky with all that paint?

Seal coat, is your friend. I did like a triple layer seal job on mine seeing as how they would be handled so much. I've been using them for awhile and no problems. Feel great too.

Wow! I love this. Out of the box, these really look like bantha dung, but painted, they are NICE!

There is a technique called a Reverse Wash that can be used for things like this. It does require a couple of steps and both acrylic and enamel paint.

You start with painting the part with an acrylic paint in the color you want the raised area to be. Then you apply a gloss coat (not strictly necessary but highly recommend) and then paint the whole part including painting over the raised area with the enamel paint. Finally you take a q-tip with some lighter fluid/white spirits on it and lightly drag it over the raised area. This will remove the enamel paint exposing the acrylic paint underneath.

Brilliant!!! This is exactly what I am thinking of doing. I’m going to try some paint pens from Amazon instead of using paint brushes as I know me I’ll be anal about getting the white lines on top PERFECT.

I’ve got an airbrush so I might get a white primer from army painter the. Go with a black airbrush then do the paint pens for the white, red, blue, I love your color choices!!

Which seal coat did you use?

I used what I had available already which was Games Workshop/Citadel "Munitorum Varnish". It is considered a matte varnish technically, and after two or more coats it starts to show but one coat for a standard model is fine. Generally I do default to GW paint because my own experience tells me it's more durable and play-hearty. I don't have any data to support that though.

My templates scheme had a heavy metallic and gloss style to it and the third coat did dim it a tad. Not enough for me to worry about it though. I could go back over it with spot gloss, but I was good with the final. But if you used like Army Painter brand, I'd wager you would be in just as good of shape.

Will do, we’re moving houses soon so I might not get a chance to post anytime soon, I got all the supplies I need though!

Well I botched the set I had, the primer I used came out all wrong and it wasn’t worth trying to remove, sadly I am now going to go with acrylic.

i had contacted FFG to get ahold of a single Range 1 ruler, just a I could have a 1,2,3 without having to need to take them apart during play, sadly they don’t sell them or provide them without buying a full set again.

Why it wasn't worth to remove? To discard them is what isn't worth. Tell us more and maybe we can find a way to remove the evil primer.

What type of primer did you use? Easy Off oven cleaner will usually work for both enamel and lacquer based primers. A less toxic and smelly option is to use products like Simple Green, Purple Power and Super Clean. I've used all three with varying degrees of success. Put the parts in a zip lock bag, cover with your choice of product, seal it up and wait. Depending on the paint and how long its been curing you could see results in several hours or it might take longer.

I have found that some types of varnish don't react at all with the above products. In that case try scuffing the top coat with sandpaper to break through the varnish and try again. If no effect, you can try Dot 3 brake fluid.

Good Luck.

Well.. I broke down and just bought some acrylics off the bay after I tried to remove the primer off of them. Honestly I think I tried it when it was too humid.

I’m in the middle of moving houses and just didn’t have the focus for redoing them and spending another 20 on the plastics so I went with the acrylics!
