Reconciling "the Look" with "the Stats"

By LETE, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Hi!

If this topick has already been addressed, please, point me in the right direction, thanks!

The W40K universe has a serious tube fetish, at least graphically:

How do you guys reconcile the outlandishly tube-fetishy illos with the lack of cyberware/anything resembling machine-like stuff (except for a few isolated cases, - cough cough - Adeptus Mechanicus), in the game's stats, at least for the "typical" Acolyte? Do we have to assume that every Talent a character gets modifies it adding new tubes/cables i/o plugs, for instance?

How do you handle this, even if you do?

Thanks!

The game system is very dangerous, even with Fate Points the critical chart can do some serious physical damage to the players. The best way to overcome many of the conditions - such as damaged organs - the chart imposes is through implants, artificial limbs, eyes, etc. All of these are going to come with some notable augmentation.

Most new DH characters are going to be more or less flesh and blood, the notable exception being Techpriests. After a few years of rough and tumble living in the service of the Throne some of them are going to more closely resemble the artwork. Such is the nature of service in His name.

One of the characters in my game started life as 100% meat. After an unfortunate incident with a Krak missile he is now a full-cyber-rez combat cyborg! A rather radical change in appearance, obviously, to say nothing of the 60 insanity points he has collected. He also has a fear of heights, mutters prayers near-constantly and has a habit of drinking oil now... The Techpriest started augmented (obviously) and now he is a little shy of 400kg, most of that being metal! Our assassin is mostly OEM, but he had to get all the toes on one of his feet replaced after an Eldar pirate hacked them off with a monoblade (he needed new boots too). Our Adept is lightly augmented, sporting a nice auger array and a few data-interface implants mostly. The psyker is physically intact, but she just underwent a mindcleansing due to some "issues". Our Cleric is physically intact, but she has some taint issues: 31 IP and 20 corruption on a non-psyker! The heroic leader has so far managed to remain of sound mind and body somehow: Impressive for a Guardsman...

My Rank 5 Guardsman would kill for his IP and CP to be that low.

He would, really. Who does he need to kill? Skulls for the.........Emperors skull throne?

On page 146 of Ascension, the designers have addressed this issue by introducing a a new cybernetic commonly available called the Cerebral Plug -a Head-Tube in every skull and a chicken in every garage!

In the past in my game, most any augmentic or talent that hinted at augmentation such as Electro-graph use came with a complementary set of Head-Tubes. Have a bionic arm? You'll need these Head-Tubes to link the auxiliary servo-joint shrines to your central nervous system! Have an augmentic eye? You'll need these Head-Tubes to insure data from the eye gets where it needs to go! Have the talent "Binary Chatter"? Heck, you'll need these special Head-Tubes to link your speech centers to that vox-box!
