What is even the meta these days?

By HERO, in Star Wars: Armada

Hey folks, was convinced to going to a Prime event (is this Regionals now?) for Armada even though I haven't played in what it feels like years. Life has been busy to say the least!

What is the actual meta these days? Last I played was pre-SSD/bigger games, pre-Thrawn even, and the meta was filled with nothing but squadrons :P

Yup, primes is the new names for regionals.

Depending on when your prime is, right now SSD is a hot item. Heavy squadrons are still very powerful and all ship lists can be successful if leveraged correctly.

Really depends on what your strengths are and what you want to play.

Later on in Dec, new ship expansions will be released which will shake up Primes midstride.

Just take an Assault SSD with JJ, Kallus and Quad Laser Turrets and you'll win half your games 😛

Ackbar, Ackbar everywhere!

Any fleet you build needs to have answers to both the SSD, and big Imp squads. Ackbar has become very popular again as a means of dealing with the SSD.

Ravager SSD builds have knocked rebel squadrons off their dominant streak, but you might see a few.

Was at the capa cup tournament in PA last weekend. Seems like among 16 players there were just a handful of lists.

I believe there were at least 5 lists with some mix of ISD, Victory and Demolisher with some amount of squads ranging from 0 to 12 ties.

There were two SSD lists. They didn't do well

Two akbar lists of different sorts, one of which won.

One empire bombers list with thrawn, interdictor, raider and quasar

By didn't do well, do you mean only got 2nd place?

Ackbar MC80 Home Ones only.

Did one of them get second? Were in 6th and 10th when I asked after 2nd round

One of them got two 10-1s in a row. In a three round tournament, results aren't particularly stable, so making assumptions based on how things are apparently doing at the end of the second round usually isn't all that predictive.

What kind of builds were they?

In my area it seems people are still figuring out some things as far as meta goes. But my opinion is proximity mines are gonna be very powerful. I have a list with Akbar mines and I think it's will be good

I asked Colin (#2) for his list, this is what he told me.

Faction: Galactic Empire
Points: 399/400

Commander: Moff Jerjerrod

Assault Objective: Surprise Attack
Defense Objective: Fleet In Being
Navigation Objective: Dangerous Territory

[ flagship ] Star Dreadnought Command Prototype (220 points)
- Moff Jerjerrod ( 23 points)
- Captain Needa ( 2 points)
- Expert Shield Tech ( 5 points)
- Captain Brunson ( 5 points)
- Gunnery Team ( 7 points)
- Linked Turbolaser Towers ( 7 points)
= 269 total ship cost

Imperial Star Destroyer Kuat Refit (112 points)
- Strategic Adviser ( 4 points)
- Electronic Countermeasures ( 7 points)
- Leading Shots ( 4 points)
- External Racks ( 3 points)
= 130 total ship cost

= 0 total squadron cost

I think the only true meta I've seen is just take surprise attack. That objective seems to be everywhere the past few weeks.

3 raid tokens on a flagship and forcing enemy support ships to catch up with the flagship can be powerful. Really need to be careful to select that one

I’d assume you’ll see

-SSD lists. Probably Ravager for antisquad

-Imp 2 ship

-Rieekan Aceholes

-Fish farm of some sort

have a way to go up against all of those and you’re fine

The meta in my area is pretty weird these days...

Everyone is playing these 200 point fleets on 3x3 boards. You get just 1 upgrade per ship and no unique upgrades so there isn't a Demolisher or Yavaris in sight. You have to take at least 1 non-flotilla ship. Other than that, you include as many squadrons as you like, but you can only have 2 unique squadrons maximum which means lots of generic TIE Fighters/Interceptors, X-Wings and Lancers. Like I said, pretty weird 😅

Well if the Australian Nationals (yes that is what I still call it) top 4 is anything to go buy the Meta is Thrawn ISD1 + bombers, TRC90's and Thrawn SSD

Would Thrawn be an effective counter to Surprise Attack? Pull a Thrawn dial and discard it on turn 1 and it clears all the raid tokens? Or won't that work?

A dial can only clear the tokens that are already given. If you use the 3 Thrawn dials only to clear the 3 Raid tokens, than I would say the Surprise Attack would be a counter against Thrawn ...

Better you have some Command token shenanigans.

Yes. Surprise attack gives one one raid token per turn for the he first 3 turns. So, your choices are to have raid tokens on your ship for 3 turns and spend a thrawn dial on turn 4....which ouch, or spend your dials over the first 3 turns to get the raid tokens off in which case you lose thrawns entire power for your flagship. Or spend 2 dials on some combination of turns. No matter how you slice it, you lose dials on the flagship. So, thrawn is the best commander to have against surprise attack, but it also effectively neuters him. They cancel each other out

You don’t have to clear the raid tokens every round. I believe you can also take command tokens from your dials in the first two rounds and then spend the round three dial to clear all the raid tokens while using those accumulated command tokens as needed. This approach doesn’t work as well in fleets that are squadron-command intensive so much. I feel like Surprise Attack hits non-rogue squadron-heavy fleets heaviest.

You can't spend a Thrawn dial to clear raid, it doesn't work that way.

You can just take a token on first turn as raid doesn't prevent you getting a token from a matching dial, just resolving the command. Then on the turn you want to use a squad command you can just spend any token to first cancel the squad raid token and then use the squad command. It's annoying more than game changing.
