Hello all. This is my first post on these forums. I do apologize in advance if this question has been asked or is in the wrong forum.

My question is when doing character creation the first 400 free xp you receive, does that go towards your total for your new rank or is that just a free 400 xp to make your toon not such a wimp? More or less are your 400 xp closer to a new rank or do you start with 0 spent xp when the game starts?

My though would be this can fly either way depending on how your GM runs the game.

If this sounds confusing please let me know and I will try and clarify.

The 400XP does indeed go towards you attaining your next rank; as you increase rank once you exceed a specified total of spent XP. The exception being that XP spent on Background packages does not count towards this total; IHB page 26, Using Background Packages.

No worries. My own players have often asked the same thing when first being introduced to the game. And until a few months ago, I had missed the bit in the IHB until it was pointed out in another thread along these lines.
