Not sure if I'm reading this right; under determine experience it says the 'team' gains xp, is that right? surely only the fleets involved in a battle gain xp not both whole teams every battle that's fought?
Many thanks in advance.

tl;dr: I think it means the commander in a 1 v 1, or the team in a 2 v 2 or 3 v 3.
The "Determine Experience" step is part of the "Battle Phase." The stuff in that Phase applies to each individual battle; you run through everything in the "Battle Phase" for each battle (including for Pivotal Battles, see p.24).
For most battles there will be only one commander one each side. But for the Pivotal Battles all commanders will be present, which is why the rules cover all commanders from each team.
So after each battle, each commander who was present in the battle gains one experience. Each commander on the losing team gains 1 experience, for each 75 points the winning team wins by, the winning commanders gain 1 xp. It's the last one that is ambiguous:
QuoteIf one team's fleet's total fleet point value is greater than the other, the team with fewer total fleet points subtracts their fleet value from their opponent. For each full 25 points difference in the resulting value, the team with a lower fleet point value gains one additional experience. [emphasis added]
I want to say that that bit should read "each commander from the team with a lower fleet point value" - as the other paragraphs do - but it doesn't. And that suggests to me a deliberate choice, indicating this is different.
Because we are still in the "Battle Phase," I want to say that anything that happens should only affect the players involved in that battle. Particularly as the whole section on "Determine Experience" starts by saying "[t]ask force commanders that participated in the battle gain experience..."
So I'm going to go with this last rule saying that "the team" refers to either the individual commanders (in a 1 v 1 battle), or the whole team (in a Pivotal Battle). In the 1 v 1 battle, the commander gets an extra 1 experience for each 25 points difference in total fleet point value. In a 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 battle, the team with fewer points in total gets 1 experience for each 25 points difference, that gets shared out between the players in a way they agree on (or the Grand Admiral determines).
So for some examples:
That way of doing it makes sense to me, as otherwise in a 3 v 3, a 25 point difference in fleet value out of 750 becomes worth 3 Experience total, whereas in a 2 v 2 a 25 point difference out of 500 is only worth 2 Experience. The point difference is shared between the players, so the experience should be as well.
But I can see it going the other way - and it being 1 experience for each commander present.
As always, discuss with all the players and agree on something before it comes up if you can.
Edited by GrumbledukeThanks, I played it for the first turn by just dolling out the xp as I had read it. But I can still change that as I've not finished the between battles bit yet. Also am I reading right the bit about scarred being all squadrons? It seems wrong as I seem to be using a **** of a lot of scar tokens. Or should it have read 'unique' squadrons only? Again thanks in advance.

Non-unique squadrons also get scarred. If you are running a heavy-squadron swarm, and they're getting killed a lot, you might need a lot of scarred tokens (or find some other way to keep track of their status).
Hi, many thanks. It's just really that I'm on my own. Nobody round here plays Armada so I have to play both sides on my own. As you can imagine that means all ships and tokens are supplied by me and I run out very quickly. Thanks again, much appreciated.
Tokens for tracking information (so not ship tokens, obstacles or objective tokens - probably mines as well now) are one of the most relaxed parts of Armada rules. The Tournament Rules go as far as to let you use almost anything for them.
Quote...players may choose to use other items as indicators, so long as they do not obscure significant component information, are resistant to accidental modification, and their purpose of use is clear to both players
Sorry about your lack of local players. Any luck with Vassal - that gives you a chance of finding people to play against?

I hope you can find some more players to play with. I played alone many time until I could find a guy who owned a core set and was trying to get into the game. As I already had many ships I lend some to him and apart from some casual games we could play a Corellian Conflict campaign with 2 fleets each when that campaign came out. Now, a really few years later, we were able to play 2 consective campaigns with 6 real players and even make a tournament with 8 players. So don't lose hope 🙂

For whatever reason I always struggled with vassal. On the upside of playing alone I can house rule stuff that conflicts with my storyline. And leaving the map somewhere is not a big deal. One house rule I run is boots on the ground, so Legion gets involved too. Thanks for the help and suggestions.
