Passive SF's

By j_man_04, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Looking at the success of the Inquisitor/Jendon, I thought a similar approach can be made on the FO side. I'm not sure Passive Sensors is quite as effective as Jendon, but the added crew on the Starkiller as well as the mobile arc give this list a little something different.

Essentially with Hux, all three SFs can take a focus or evade, move to clear the stress, and take the passive sensor action.

A bid here isn't a bad idea, but I could easily spend those two extra points on either FCS or maybe tactical scrambler.

Starkiller Base Pilot (58)
General Hux (6)
Captain Phasma (5)
Jamming Beam (0)

Omega Squadron Expert (34)
Concussion Missiles (6)
Passive Sensors (3)

Without room for Fanatical though, I'm wondering if I should just go with Zetas and find other ways to use those points. Maybe go with Petty Officer Thanisson to synergize with Phasma?

(Yes, I can get Tavson for two points more, who objectively is the better Upsilon pilot, however his ability is shut down by the use of Hux)

I would take Tavson and Phasma and forget about Hux/Thannison altogether tbh. You can take Munitions failsafe in the SFs that way.

Any reason not to take Hux? Coordinating a focus to all three SFs and them taking range control TLs makes for a pretty scary opening engagement. That’s what have made the Inquistors so strong (along with their defensive capabilities).

Passive Ion Missile SFs did a number on me at a tournament recently.

Not because of ion as much as because they were just throwing more dice then I thought, especially out the back.

SFs are fairly good however they get built, IMHO. Plain, Optics, Passive Sensor Missiles, Gunner.

Personally, I'd go Crack Shot over Fanatical, if there are ever points to spare for Talents. Fanatical is great on ships which have a long lifespan between when they've lost shields and when they get killed. With the 3/3 ratio of the SF, that length of time is often fairly short. I'd rather front-load the damage with Crack Shot. Fanatical also really encourages an opponent to be diligent in burning down one SF before taking on the next, but non-Fanatical ones are more likely to get left at low health if an opponent has a strong attack somewhere else.

Crack Shot also helps to cover Range 1. Missiles are great at Range 2-3, but the relative weakness of a Passive & Missiles SF compared to a Gunner SF is Range 1, and that's when a SF is more likely to have Bullseye and could use Crack Shot to help ensure damage sticks.

Hux is cool, but almost surely bad. I think 3 SF is the right thing to pair with him (I'd go Gunner, for stronger Range 1, but Passive probably means a better opening with easier Focus/Lock), but he'll never be more than a cute meme. Now, flying cute meme lists can be fun, but it's good to go into a Hux strategy with this in mind.

As to why skip him? Well, Tavson gets Hull Upgrade, and the Omegas all get Crack Shot. That's probably better than Hux. ❤️ Domhnall Gleason. This basic archetype is the right way to run him if running him, but it's probably better not to run Hux.
