Schools that you feel are missing from this edition

By Horvagab, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Roleplaying Game

So, out of curiosity, I've been mulling over what kind of schools/concepts are there that are missing from this edition so far.

Crab: I actually don't feel that there is any school that requires representation? Hida pragmatists could be represented by more unarmed kata really

Crane: Kakita Artisans! We have sword smiths, but no Artisans :(

Dragon: Agasha Alchemists and/or Yamabushi are what I feel are missing so far. Otherwise..probably everything we have?

Lion: Matsu Beastmasters, and that's about it?

Phoenix: Isawa Ishiken and Henshin. Titles for Tensai. Shiba Illusionist

Scorpion: Shosuro Butei! Maybe Soshi magistrates.

Unicorn: Utaku infantry? I did like some of the horse related schools, to raising and caring for animals.

Schools that need to be done also:

Crane: Asahina Archer, Doji Rhetorician, Daidoji Harrier.

Lion: Akodo Kensai, Ikoma Historian.

Scorpion: kagenari (Shadow Adept)

Titles: Sensei, Shogun

Many of the minor clan ones but those seem to be coming.

Crane: Harriers

Lion: Kensai, Ikoma scout

Dragon: Not really sure what they need.

Phoenix: Henshin... all I really want.

Scorpion: Shadow adept.

Unicorn: Some kinda foreign culture specialist.

Crab: Some kinda Bully courtier.

Unaligned: Taoist archer, Ronin shugenja, and Bloodspeaker.

Henshin and Ishiken definitely. The Tensai I feel should always be just high rank specialized shugenja.

The minor clan schools definitely.

The Scorpion now have the bushi so I think they are fine, I never liked the actors in concept or execution.

Mizuguri/Kagaku focused Agasha are another missing school.

Crane, the Artisans. Everything else can probably be done through kata/shuji/ninjutsu although they probably need some positions to cover everything.

The Kaiu Engineers don't seem to cover all the niches the old school did, so I think something needs to be done about that...

In the Lion I think only the Beastmasters and the Warden need to be done, and the Wardens can probably be reproduced with Kata and Shuji.

On the Unicorn I miss the Utaku infantry.

Hida beserker school

Hida Berserker is updated as the Damned title.

Far-and-away, the Minor Clan schools are what I want to see most. To me, the Hare feel like the quintessential Minor Clan, so I'd love to see them. The Dragonfly have also always been a personal favorite. And it stinks to not have schools for the Centipede and Wasp, especially for folks who want to use the AEG timeline. Ideally the Fox too, though at least you can sort of make that work with the spirit school.

After the Minor Clans, my next pick is ronin. I'd love a ronin shugenja school, and mechanics for the otokodate would be great (probably titles).

The Phoenix Tejina might be my favorite great clan school, but I'm not sure how to do them anymore without stepping on the Asahina's toes. And as said, Tensai and Ishiken should get mechanics somehow.

For me personally, I'd rather see the Unicorn War Dogs get some mechanics (maybe just a title) than the Beastmasters. I'm okay without Horiuchi.

Ah, no. Hida Bersekers, the "Dead-Eyes," are not synonymous with the Damned.

So Hida Berserker is updated as the "Dead Eyes" advantage, which is not even close to an 'update.'

This is definitely coming in Path of Waves I think, one of the PCs in the last Gencon adventure was a peasant who was secretly a shugenja or something, but their school name seems like a ronin (or other non-clan) shugenja.

Also I thought dead eyes were a hiruma thing? We only have one Hida school, even with crab having 5 families they should get at least one more if we do like, a book per great clan, and I'm pretty sure they don't have anything but "people who hit things".

There's only been four books vs the dozens of books and multiple editions of the game under AEG. Of course there's a lot that's missing, don't worry too much about it though.

Oh, I'm not worrying, this is just a sort of thought exercise. Since we have a new direction on how schools are built, and just...rolled out, I figured let's give this a try.

For example, for Ishiken, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Void spells are a different technique entirely, and access would be gated via schools (Isawa Ishiken?) and perhaps some titles. Otherwise, it might be tricky to do.

Shiba Illusionist might still be missing, for a certain value of missing.

Agasha Alchemists are in the core book

Minor Clans were always my favorite part of previous editions. In fact, my current game focuses heavily on tension between them and their great clan cousins, even if there aren't many official schools.

I'll be extremely disappointed if their solution turns into a "three man alliance" school/template with only one technique or school ability that differentiates each minor clan.

The Mystic doesn't feel like Alchemist to me. As I mulled on it, I found that Agasha have 3 themes/concepts in them:

1. Multi-elemental spells, playing with the elements - the Mystic does this

2. Alchemy: not present at the moment. The beta had similar rules for potions as they are for wards, and I liked those, but I think a specific alchemist school can also work

3. Yamabushi: the fighting priest, though this might be more Tamori than Agasha,I think with the FFG approach to schoosl this can also work. I mean, if the Doji bureocrat fit in, then I think a Yamabushi can also :)

Every invocation has a different name according to tradition, so they would use the Alchemical name, saying that their Theology roll is making the alchemical component for the invocation or the preparing of the alchemical substance is preforming the invocation. Also, Wards are in the beginning of the sub chapter on invocations, in the core-book.

With the comment in the last RPG article about designing your own gaijin nation, I am now expecting somewhere to find advice on how to design your own Minor Clans.

Here's hoping for more advice than what "Merchants guide to Rokugan" gave us!

What book ? I'd like to know so I can snap up the book in question

Courts of Stone includes the Bayushi Deathdealer - it's a Bushi with some light Shinobi undertones.

Mucho thankee to both of you guys :)

I think we’re forgetting something very important here, and I am quite frankly disappointed and appalled at our Scorpions for neglecting the very best of their bushi. Say what you will about Minor Clans or ishiken - the game will not be complete without

the Dark Sword

OF

BITTER LIES!

I wish they'd do April Fools releases again. The Tanuki Drunken Master was a fun idea...
