It's time for an official 6x3

By eliteone, in Star Wars: Armada

It's time for an official 6x3.

FFG, please manufacture an official 6x3 mat for Star Wars: Armada/Epic play X-Wing. Customers will buy a single, proper mat to play Armada and Epic-play X-Wing.

Many individuals in my local area have bought the SSD, despite the cost, this is proof that your customers will buy a quality FFG-produced 6x3 mat. With WEight (Wave 8 ) right around the corner and a long wait for Clone Wars factions, now would be the perfect time to produce this!

So long as X-wing is their center of attention I doubt they'll make armada focused mats. Heck, Legion has been successful since launch and they still haven't made a 6x3 for that either...

I'm more wondering why now is the time...

I quite like using 3x3 ones - gives options for more variety.

Like the old, never-actually-happened tiles.

Lacking an official 6x3 when I got into Armada, I just bought a real nice one from another company with money FFG could have had!

The double 3x3s are more versatile, since you can use them for 2 small games. I suppose you could use them for a single large nebula across a 6x3, though. Or perhaps the gate from Rogue One.

I don't think I'd need/want to see as many 6x3 options as 3x3s. As you note, 3x3 is now an official format starting to see more play than 6x3 in some areas as a result of the excellent RitR campaign.

Still, though, particularly for tournaments - at least one 6x3 would be really nice to have as an option. It looks cleaner, and you don't get the line down the middle that things have a tendency to 'catch' on at the worst possible moment.

There are a fair amount of 3x3s that I could see being produced before we ever see an official 6x3. Coruscant, Jakku, and D'Qar come to mind (the first to tie in with X-Wing's new Separatist and Republic factions, the latter two to go with the growing Resistance and First Order factions). All are somewhat future-proof, too, since Clone Wars is confirmed for Armada and the sequel trilogies will surely find their way into the game eventually.

Coruscant could work just as well as a 6'x3', though, or even empty space. Do remember that the darling of FFG's miniature lines, X-Wing, does have it's own 'Epic'-scale battles coming. As in, not even just a custom scenario in a ship release, but an entire expansion adding a new play format that calls for 6'x3' play area.

So 6'x3' will become a standard play option in at least 2 of FFG's space-based miniature games.

It does make one feel an official mat for it should be getting worked on at some point.

Probably because it's Q4 of 2019 (IE., "now"-ish) that X-Wing gets a major new play format cross-expansions which also needs the same size.

Armada was never going to get it on its own, but Armada and X-Wing needing the same size?

Also keep in mind that FFG just pushed a new format, and new campaign, that is largely based around 3x3 play areas.

FFG also had the option of introducing 6x3 mats when Legion came out, but still went with combining 3x3 ones.
