Aces High Ground is the best X-Wing format

Its pretty much the most fun thing ever.

Its interesting and no one takes it to seriously.

The format generates jokes that are actually funny.

I only played it twice most recently as a break from the wave 5 meta.

Been hearing some buddies of mine who went to worlds talk it up. I’m really excited to try it out, and have already been theory crafting some builds, including an Ace Jan build, some IG shenanigans, and a Resistance Chewie who wants you to kill him.

I agree

it's really fun, I agree

Also post your alternate format ideas and builds here I guess.

"Fun" Build:

Lieutenant Tavson — Upsilon-Class Command Shuttle 64
Biohexacrypt Codes 1
Pattern Analyzer 5
Autoblasters 2
Collision Detector 6
Electronic Baffle 2
Ship Total: 80
Half Points: 40 Threshold: 6

Alternate Format: Juggernaut

  • There are two teams, the Juggernaut alone, and the players hunting him/her.
  • The only person who can earn points is the Juggernaut (hence the title).
  • The Juggernaunt's purpose is to destroy as many players as possible in order to amass points.
  • The other players' goal is to destroy the current Juggernaunt, in order for them to become the next Juggernaunt.

Alternate Format: Sniper

  • All Attacks are Bullsye Only

Played one round of Aces High at World's. They set the point total at 80 points. Guess how much Fenn with Outmaneuver and Adv. Protons costs. Turn two, I one-shot Kylo Ren. It was glorious.

Vader with Passive sensors is borked in that format though.

Also, we played where the first player token rotated around the table. I think that is a great idea.

Okay, from what I’ve heard, Bombs and mines can be a little screwy in Aces High. But even with that, I’m tempted by this:

Jan Ors (43)
Lone Wolf (5)
Proton Bombs (5)
Sabine Wren (3)
Delayed Fuses (1)
Engine Upgrade (2)
Moldy Crow (18)

Ship total: 77 Half Points: 39 Threshold: 3

Total: 77

Not much of a bomb guy, but have been tempted by using Sabine on a HWK. Seemed like a kooky enough format to finally do it.

I've played it twice so far (once with only two people, so we did it a bit different) using this Kare Kun: https://raithos.github.io/?f=Resistance&d=v8ZsZ200Z252X125W195W105W175W178W171W232&sn=Unnamed Squadron&obs=

Kare Kun (52)
Marksmanship (1)
BB-8 (6)
Afterburners (6)
Integrated S-Foils (0)
Primed Thrusters (8)
Black One (2)
Autoblasters (2)
Total: 77

Once per life, just put yourself wherever. Autoblaster is dank vs. aces that ignore you. Lost both games, although it was fun each time.

As far as formats go, Ace High in general rather reminds me of old school FPSs. From there, we can draw inspiration like:

Slappers Only

  • Attacks can only be made at range 0-1

Rockets Away!

  • Ships must equip a Missile secondary weapon. Can only Fire primaries when charges used up.

Mobile King of the Hill

  • A classic game type, but shift where you’ve got to hold very few rounds to keep people scrambling. (Might need to go bigger on the play area than a standard mat.)

Maybe even...

Zombie!

  • Start game with one infected ship. Ships destroyed come back on the zombie team. Round or regular time limit required.

so some thoughts:

Slappers only: I'm in, but maybe ban things like Fangs or Boba that like Range one a bit too much.

Rockets away: No primaries ever, give ships the reload action

Mobile King of the hill: No thoughts right now, I like it

Zombies: I've been talking with others about this, and I'd like to try it. Winner is last player standing, Zombies are vultures with charges and first Zombie is Heyena with Proton Torps and Charges (swap Torps for TA-175 when another Zombie spawns).

Incredibly dank in Aces High. Also very funny to watch.

Slappers Only: can agree on banning Fangs and Boba. A little too good for the format.
Rockets Away: I’m for it.

Zombies: I like it.

Edit: for Slappers, Norra might also be a bit too good for the format.

EDIT edit: You know what, there are a lot of Range one triggered abilities to consider for Slappers. Instead of going through them individually, I’ll just leave it to @Do I need a Username ‘s original wording which covers them.

I literally played this for all of my two free days at World's. It is an insane amount of fun.

A suggestion used by the judges at world's for the format. Death by bombs, rock and debris damage, and damage from critical hits all count as fleeing the battlefield, so while the person who uses them may not gain points their opponents can lose them. It adds an interesting wrinkle as someone with 8 points, 1 hull, 2 bounties, a loose stabilizer and a five point lead was trying to figure out if losing three points or potentially giving one of us four was the better solution. You don't have to use it and I feel aces high is going to have a lot of house rules and local variations, but I thought it worked real well.

JOUST ME!!! (50pt category)

DBS-404 (30)
Adv. Proton Torpedoes (6)
Concussion Missiles (6)
Shield Upgrade (6)

Thanks....I think?

Played a game against two Covas with leia crew. Really good ship in this format with those backward maneuvers.

yes, because you get bonus points from the bounty if you kill the person that killed you with it, which is the dankest thing

This sounds awesome! I want to make build with Anakin flying circles around everyone with Supernatural Reflexes.

this looks really familiar!

...though I did feel bad, someone said in one of my random actual aces high games "that shuttle looks really fun, I just wish it were fun for us..." when they thought I was out of earshot. It was the only person (that I know of) that wasn't enjoying the nonsense of an upsilon in an aces format, thought. Would recommend.
