Clone wars era faction worth playing ?

By ChuiSaoul, in X-Wing

Vultures indeed pop, but with Energy Shells they hit stupid hard (probes are love + life; not for your opponent...) for their cost and Networked is incredible. Nothing more infuriating than failing to Initiative kill a well networked Vulture

The Torrent is the opposite. It's very chunky for its cost, but it's just a 2-die primary. You need a force multiplier like Sinker to turn them into anything more than meatshields

At 25 points a pop, there's nothing wrong with meatshields. But personally, I prefer the Arc when I need to get **** done.

Edit: also with Vultures, target priority becomes an issue. Because every ship in the CiS list will hit basically as hard regardless of point investment (ESCs are lovely things) you'll have a really tough time deciding who to go for--especially with networked complicating things

I personally don't "like" vultures (see my name) but I've never regretted bringing the one/two I own. They're REALLY cost effective, and networked + ESCs give you a lot of fun, interesting decisions to make that your normal swarm just doesn't have

What's all this I'm reading about the V-19 torrents being garbage?

Read the entirety of my posts. They are garbage, AND they are awesome. A ship can be both. Them being bad is why they are so cheap, ergo, their strength.

I totally agree that 5 hull is great for their cost, but that doesn’t make them good ships. They have BR linked to evade, but that doesn’t make them good ships. Their dial is serviceable, until you have to clear stress or strain. Their cost is what makes them good, and their cost is due to them having 2 attack, 2 evade, and the maneuverability of a peterbilt.

And if you are having success with torrents and missiles, more power to you. It never felt good to me, and I tried it a lot. I’ve found it tends to be far worse in practice than it looks on paper. For damage dealing I tend towards Jedi or arcs (or Sinker + mini swarm to get some consistent mods). But if it works for you locally, that is great (I’m being serious here, it’s hard to tell in type).

My point isn’t that they are “leave them in the case” bad, my point is that they were designed to be just bad enough to be great.

2 or 3 V-19s with various Jedi? Awesome.

Sinker with 5 V-19s? Awesome.

8 V-19’s (or 6 with ordnance)? Awful. Hilarious, but awful.

Disclaimer: from my personal experience.

Theory: 8+ V-19s in epic? Awesome.

I also play CIS. I love my vultures but they get 1 shot... A lot.

Once the droids start the bump train the networked calc is useless and they all get swatted down like flies

Ffg did a great job designing these things so that they match their place in canon. 💜

Their dial is actually really good. They have a bunch of red but at least the options are available. That red 1 hard is really useful in a pinch.

Arguably the only thing that actually sucks about their dial is the red 3 bank.

But It's a 5 hull ship for a 25 point base cost with 2 agility. The ability to take ordinance, a modification and a pilot talent for the better initiative ships. These ships can be customized to fit your list as an amazing point filler with good staying power, extra bodies or even as a swarm.

Point wise they're actually better than vulture droids and vultures see play in 95% of separatist lists. The only thing vultures have going for them is the struts which can make them not care where they go and still get actions and take shots.

I'm experimenting with golds and blues with sync console and ordinance lists lately and i have to say I'm VERY impressed. If my opponent wants to kill my torrents it's usually focusing them down with 3-4 shots just to kill one (2 if they are really lucky and my defense also fails me)

Plus the ship design is amazing and probably one of my favorites in the star wars universe

Where we came down was they're incredibly effective at doing their job, but it's worth knowing what their job is. They're effective for their cost, but they're not like, TIE/sf good, where you can just spam a bunch of those with pretty much any upgrades and do decently.

As to dial, I maintain that it's bad.

Here's how I'd put dials into rough tiers (by no means am I being exhaustive on example ships):

  • A-Wing-tier: these have lots of blues, particularly both hard turns and banks, and no red on the basic moves. Stuff like TIE Interceptor, v1, A-Wings, Fangs, Silencers, TIE/fo.
  • X-Wing-tier: mostly white, with at least two white hard turns, but only so-so blues (only banks, usually). Maybe there's some red, but usually it'd be in addition to a lot of white. Stuff like X-Wings, Belbullab, E-Wing, TIE/sf, Lancers, Firesprays, Falcons, Kihraxz, TIE Bombers, basic TIE Fighters.
    • I'd probably put Hyenas and Vultures in here, since while they've got great hards, they stink at banks.
  • Y-Wing-tier: Only one white hard turn, but typically all three banks will be blue/white. Rebel/Scum Y-Wings, Scurrgs, U-Wing, TIE Punishers, ARCs, VCX-100.
  • B-Wing-tier: Only one white hard turn, limited blues, but also Lots of red on fairly normal moves (stuff like 3-banks or 4-straights). Stuff like B-Wings, G1-A, Torrents.
    • Torrent's dial isn't too bad for the tier, however. The fact that the 4-straight is white and not red is really nice, but it's certainly in the bottom third of dials.
  • Shuttle-tier: generally no "flip" moves, only hard turns are red. Lambda, Escape Craft.
    • Technically the TIE Reaper, but not really. There's a lot of ships where there are tricks and nice effects over and above the dials.

I think I'd put the v19 dial above the b wing between y wing and b wing.

But its dial is still good enough. Maybe it's just me but i really value the ability to make hard 1 turns. Even if it means its red.. At least the option is there.

These ships don't need a lot of blue for destressing. The 1 bank,1,2 and 3 straight are all plenty good to destress and still be in a nice position after a 3k turn or 2 talon roll.

I don't have much trouble maneuvering these guys

Anyways i honestly think the only thing truly bad about the dial is the red 3 bank. But that's just me.

Perhaps some of you feel really spoiled for dials now that there are so many different interceptors to choose from?

The torrent is extremely effective for what it is, its cost, its ability to absorb several hits and a really good missle platform for cheap

If you know how to position yourself well these guys are very efficient and have the ability to slow roll your opponent with possible 2 rounds of ordinance firing before they get to range one

I still think it's a lot closer to the B-Wing. Personally, I think the B-Wing gets better flip-moves because they're slower, but the Torrent gets the 4-straight, so it's kind of a wash.

But this is all nitpicking at this point. Pretty much anyone who's played for a little while can see that the Gold Trooper is a really effective ship.

And then, above all that is the RZ-2, the one true king of dials.

For all the haters of the Torrent....

I went 4-2 at the LCQ making 28th (and thus guaranteed a spot at worlds even if every single invite award ticket was claimed) with Obi, Ric, and 3x gold squad troopers. They’re not that dangerous all by themselves, but you get a flight of them in your business and it’s bad news. They are well worth the points and I’d happily fly that block of 75 points against most any non-swarm match up. For swarms I kinda write them off but try to keep them alive long enough for the aces to do their hit and runs

I love using the Jedi and their Delta 7 Aethersprites. Not only did I fall in love with that ship after seeing it in 2002, but man, I love fine tuned controls, and that sweet, sweet action bar of 5+ abilities, and of course, the force. I usually play X-wing for fun, but sometimes I can get competitive if I absolutely want to, which is rare. The Jedi fill this role for me perfectly in the game.

Being a fan of the Clone Wars, I loved both powers going at it, gave off a vibe as though the Clone Wars was the WW2 of Star Wars. Playing a droid swarm is really fun. Only downside is that it prolongs the game too much with my taste.

In time, I'll be getting a Core Set and get into Rebels and Imperials.
