For instance, if a 350 point fleet only deals 25 damage, and a 75 point fleet deals 50, the larger force ends up retreating?

No objectives though? Speaking from experience, "half the sector" is really hard to conquer even when you're in the lead.

Correct. But the larger force would be rolling 7 dice, and the smaller only 2.

The race is not always to the swift, nor the fight to the strong, but that is usually the way to bet.

I can add some as we go if you would like - these are just the basic rules.

I'd like to dip my toe in the water. Will likely get squashed early on, but who knows?

Whenever I see WoB I will always think World of Balance.

Edit: just read the rules. Love the new combat mechanic. I remember suggesting something similar a while back based in a game I'm working on. Let's see if it plays out well.

Edit 2: HAVE SQUADRONS ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO JUMP?!?!? If so, how did I miss that. Ugh.
