Recommendations for transport and storage?

By KiraYamatoSF, in Star Wars: Legion

Pretty sure I have made a similar topic in the past but I figured I would do this again and see what new ideas people have.

So for me I have used a container with sheet metal taped to the bottom and put magnets under all my Rebel units to both store and transport them. But with the Clone Wars stuff coming out I am questioning if I want to do the same for the Republic or opt for another option.

So yeah, how is everyone storing and/or transporting their minis? Plano, Foam, Magnets, or something else?

Magnets. Significantly cheaper, but still secure. Then I can buy cheap covered cake pans for infantry/shorter vehicles, magnetize a box, or use a cheap metal toolbox. Lidded cake pans stack really nicely for long term storage.

Battlefoam. Everyday, all day. Slowly gotten most of the local Legion community onboard with them, and just got a friend down in Texas to get one as well. The foam is good, and the cases are even better. Built in pockets for stuff right off the bat, and plenty of room for expansion with MOLLE pouches. If you eventually decide to go the magnet route, you can always upgrade to the MagnaRack.

If I had to choose?

Get a cardboard battlefoam stacker (large) for each faction
https://us.battlefoam.com/battle-foam-large-stacker-box-empty-black/

Then I'd get unit trays from Feldherr for your corps/special forces
https://www.feldherr.net/for/star-wars-legion/fs055a001-foam-tray-for-star-wars-legion-48-miniatures/a-58752

Everything else I'd either use battlefoams custom tray maker to optimize the trays to your collection or get the feldherr cut outs. (e-webs, at rts, speeder, atsts so on)

It's a cheap way to store your stuff and keep it separated by faction

I'm using Safe&Sound.

In line with this, can someone please link what they have purchased with respect to binders/card sleeves/token boxes/etc that one would need to keep a new Legion kit organized?

I started out with a normal binder and card pages from Wal-Mart, slowly transitioned over to side loaders like those sold by BCW. They tend to hold the cards better, as I seem to have a few thousand copies of Targeting scopes or Comms Relay.

In terms of token storage, a small tackle box or sewing supply box should work great for you.

Magnets, 100%.

I have used foam for every other miniatures game I have played before this, and it's pretty nice, but it's not cheap, it's not space efficient, and if you're not careful the foam can damage minis (scratching paint, things getting stuck, etc.).

I recently got around to finishing a magnetic storage box that can hold 4 8"x12" trays, which is enough to carry more than double what I currently need. A single tray can hold 70+ small base minis. The steel sheets and ~100 magnets cost me less than $25. You do of course need a box to put that in, but depending on your needs that can be as cheap as a few bucks.

For rebels, make a Gr-75 carrying case.

For the Republic, make an Acclamator.

I really find this tackle box storage to work wanders. The small side boxes holds all the tokens, the main boxes hold most infantry, the top piece is large enough for everything except the biggest units, and you can buy more more tackle boxes to switch out with X-wing.

I had this exact box for Armada when I started out lol

Magnets magnets magnets

containers like these are magnetic and you don't have to worry about gluing a sheet into some other container. They tend to stack depending on the lid that comes with it.

I love mine. So much room to store troops. Even speeder bikes on their posts fit in this container.

Thanks for the input all. I am also planning to snag a bigger dice bag from which to draw tokens (encased in protectors). Does anyone have a good size of how big that should be?

Something that your hand will fit comfortably in ;)

I have a Battlefoam bag that I have used for other games and went with the magnet method for Legion. I prefer the magnets. I can fit more in a smaller space and feel they are even more protected than the foam bag. I lined stackable Sterlite cases with sheet metal on the bottoms and sides.

Cases: https://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-1427CLR-Stack-Carry-See-through/dp/B01M12WWPI/ref=pd_bxgy_201_img_2/137-9484737-2964564?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01M12WWPI&pd_rd_r=29747f01-847b-48fd-9c5b-1a830121a3cd&pd_rd_w=yPTGN&pd_rd_wg=R6GqB&pf_rd_p=09627863-9889-4290-b90a-5e9f86682449&pf_rd_r=A07PT5YCFV26HYMKJD3K&psc=1&refRID=A07PT5YCFV26HYMKJD3K

I keep my cards in boxes to take up less space rather than binders. I only take the cards I am using to tournaments. I found some small tin cases from the $1 store (they had puzzles), put magnets on, and attach them to my case. For tokens, I use small tackle box.

Feldherr make specific legion shaped foam inserts. A little pricey but Ive got one arriving soon. When I look back at all the broken GW stuff I had from when I was a teenager I'm sorrt I didnt take storage more seriously.

I not so secretly hope those all go on sale Black Friday so I can buy some up for my Legion and WHU.

Currently my legion transportation is 3d printed boxes with inserts for the bases on the bottom. Keeps them semi secure but not optimal. And I no longer have access to the printing I did so it makes a challenge there

Last year on Black Friday I got 2 bags for a total of $30 plus about $20 or so for foam. I use them for armada and they work well enough.

I have a couple of battlefoam bags and over 20 of their foam trays and love every bit of that product. Having said that I decided to go a different direction with Star Wars Legion. I bought Pelican style cases that both protect and are perfect for transportation. The Apache line of hard cases at Harbor Freight tools are especially economical if you wait for the special they do every other week or so.

I bought the large 3800 for $39.99 and it comes with pluck foam. Additionally it had the advantage that it is 2mm longer on each side than the Battlefoam SeaWolf foam inserts so you can buy those inserts if you want custom loadout (I did buy a couple of custom inserts for my imperials). The pluck foam they comes with is really easy to use, I was able to fit my T-47, 3 AT-RTs and almost all of my rebel troops (far more than you would need for an 800 point game). I travel a lot for work, so I bought the smallest one (1800) to take minis with me to paint. I'm able to fit 12 minis, paint brushes and 4 Vallejo size paint bottles.

After I bought mine, Harbor Freight came out with two larger versions a 4800 (with additional clips on the sides) and a rifle case size 9800. Don't have either so I can't say how good they would be but the 4800 looks like it might be even better than my 3800.

BTW, no I don't work for harbor freight I just really like my legion cases.

One thing to remember if you use this sort of storage system: they look like cases for guns, camera equipment, or other expensive items that are easily pawned/resold. I have heard of people having this style of army cases stolen out of their car because the thief thought they were getting something other than a bunch of models. So just don't leave them in plain sight unattended.

If you want to go cheap--magnetize your bases and then buy a cheap metal toolbox from your local big box store. Mine cost like 14 bucks or so and can hold most of my minis and easily hold an 800 point army.

I'm in the heavy duty tackle box camp. It's cheaper than mini targeted solutions and has lots of space and flexibility. I put some foam from blisters on the bottom of the trays.

I also like that they're rugged enough to sit on, which can be handy. And they look like fishing gear, so not thief bait (puns!).
