Rebels - 4 x U-Wing

By Wolf01, in X-Wing

Hello X-Wing community!

I am really interested in the 4 x U-Wing list, which seems to be pretty good at the moment.

Of course there are different variants of this list, but most of them consist of

Benthic Two Tubes, Heff Tobber, 2x Blue Squadron Scout

Can you please explain to me, how these lists have to be played correctly? Is this a swam-jousting list or do you have to split your ships most of the time?

Are there maybe even some youtube videos out there that can show me, how to fly this?

What do I have to keep in mind while flying it? Are the low pilot levels (2) a problem because you mostly fire last and move first?

Thank you for your help :)

Get in your opponents way, block moves to deny their ships actions and focus them down one at a time.

Use Leia to give yourself stress free full stops / turns.

It's basically a big old block of health backed up by 2 agility and 3 attack dice.

I'msure there's a few more tricks to it, but it's an effective all rounder list due to attrition - if you can stay ahead of the damage race then your opponent will find it difficult to deal with the sheer amount of numbers.

It's a forgiving list in that you have a lot of hit points in four medium bases behind 2 agility. If you can set kill boxes 4x 3red dice with mods does bad things.

It can be a little tricky not to block and bump yourself. You lack the ability to run down Aces late game if you're down on points. Also, seer swarm is a thing and it eats medium bases for breakfast lunch and dinner.

I ran 3 u-wings and an xwing (edrio) at Worlds and did pretty well with it.

4 UWings is a list I want to like, but I've realized recently that the most optimal way to win/play with the list is apparently flying them along board edges waiting for the opponent to engage utilizing Leia to turn on whatever comes at you. It's a "stalling because I'm winning on final salvo dice" type and it deters me from it. You don't HAVE to play it that way, but it's a main strategy for it these days.

Yeah, not my play style but if Ryan thinks that is optimal to win, it probably is. I liked putting the x-wing in and using the two tube shenanigans.

Sounds good! May I please have a look at your list?

How do you fly These ships? Do you keep them in close formation? Who is your main blocker?

I have seen two versions of how this is played, both are fairly common the second is more common at higher levels:

  • Four Spread out Straight Joust across board immediately and collapse on whatever they want to hit
  • Four Moving in a Block or Line Along their side of the board and eventually a different board edge as a mobile fortress until an engage looks acceptable or just a leia pivot to immediately face a flanker

Other Notes:

  • Two Tubes fuels focus tokens to things that bump or stress or hit rocks
  • Leia keeps the pivots and stops rolling with mods
  • Eventually roll up to r1 and block for a couple turns throwing 4 dice at stuff, Us especially with Leia are excellent blockers.
  • Rotates largely function as turret rotates to keep mobile ships honest
  • Heff Occasionally spiking a targets defense
  • Delay engage to try to force a joust and hope its to much HP to overcome late in the game.

Blue with Perceptive co-pilot

Blue with Leia

Benthic with Perceptive Co-pilot

Edrio

I would typically start in one corner and use the u-wings 4 strait to move the two blues up fast. I would start benthic facing the outside of the board angled a bit (35deg?)towards my opponents side of the board. Benthic would do a 2 bank and Edrio would start all the way back in between the two blues. Benthic would follow the blue's in and I would not commit (move out of formation) with edrio until it seemed necessary. I played aggressively and would try to attack a part of my opponents list as fast as I could before they could maneuver into good flanking positions.

The way you fly it depends on what you are facing. I've got two main openings. One that after the first turn I have a 2x2 block and a more spread out formation. Use Heff as your blocker. Make sure Benthic doesn't get blocked and protect your Leia carrier. Its a damage race against most list. Against aces you have to spread your arcs out more to pressure them..
