particular species help - new species request, end of thread

By thinkbomb, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

===== if you're part of my play group, please don't read this. lol ======

hey all, I decided to bite into the game. We'll be doing the beginner game tutorial, then a proper campaign.

I'm plotting out the general flow of the first story arc, and decided to give a nemesis early on for some early pressure. For that, I decided to go with a gen'di (named Tartakovsky) bounty hunter. This is the same species as that armored tentacle-monster thing in Clone Wars hand-animated series (Durge). The rationale being ...

  • The PCs decided on running a smuggler outfit specializing in "live deliveries" (i.e. poaching and animal smuggling)
  • The PCs generally gravitate towards chaos ... so the regenerative abilities of the gen'di will help him return in case he gets slaughtered in the first encounter

That out of the way ... super obscure species means no info in the books or fan created materials.

And ... with me being new to the game system ... doubly hard.

So yeah, advice in general on what adjustments to the Journeyman Hunter template should I make in order to account for the species?

thanks in advance

Bit of a shameless plug, but I created a statblock for Durge (the Gen'dai from the cartoon) as part of my Clone Wars-era guide, Heroes On Both Sides. You can find the thread for the full PDF a few threads below in this forum, but if you just want Durge's stats:

I would urge caution against throwing the above statblock at a beginner-level group though, particularly if the players are new to the game as a whole. However you could introduce your villain early on in non-combat encounters (via hologram, stories from a captured foe, etc) as a way to build him up until the players are a little more experienced and equipped to take him on, and have them face subordinates or unrelated antagonists in the meantime.

yeah, this villain's more intended to be like Lurtz from LotR: leader thug with a memorable face.

You provided a huge help there! I'll modify this into something more suitable to the rookie squad. Thanks a ton.

That's an interesting conversion for Durge. Some good stuff there, although personally I might make some changes.

I took a quick look at Saga Edition's version of the gen'dai (in the Clone Wars era sourcebook). Bearing in mind that it's a d20 system: Constitution +4, Wisdom -2, Charisma -2. Size Large. Base speed 8 squares/40 feet (human baseline is 6 squares). Gen'dai surge (regeneration during encounter). Hibernation trance (can be indefinite; ceases to age, needs no food, water, or air; possibly Force-based but can be used by even non-Force user gen'dai). Regeneration of lost body parts (1d10 minutes). Resilient physiology (doubled damage threshold vs. death). Mental instability (cumulative Wisdom loss past Adult category, although level-based Wisdom gains are still possible).

An "eyeball conversion" would suggest starting with Brawn 4, Agility 2, Intellect 2, Cunning 2, Willpower 1, Presence 1. WT 14 + Brawn, ST 8 + Willpower. 70 starting xp for character creation. Possibly Silhouette 2 (I can't remember if there are any playable species that big). And a boat-load of extra abilities/talents, including something to reduce rolls on the critical injury chart. Some sort of cumulative Willpower penalty for the older ones (if the Willpower is reduced to 1, then maybe the mental degeneration starts working on things like Intellect, Cunning, or Presence instead).

As always with this sort of thing, "your mileage may vary".

... another related question ...

doing prelim work to set up some characters for players new / less experienced to RPGs. My plan was to set up like ... 70% of the character and let them adjust/tweak it.

The one player said she wanted to play as a twi'lek smooth talker - Colonist Politico, easy. So I ask the other player and she strongly insists that she get to play as an Askajian bounty huntress gadgeteer.

...

given that species (askajian) is really only seen as "the fat dancer in jaba's palace" in just about any media, I figure it's safe to assume nobody has set up any stat sheets for them.

So ... any advice? My hunch was giving it a human's statline (flat 2s), some flavor environmental adventages (both arid and humid) ... and idunno? pigeon hole any specific skills or keep the human's flexibility?

Thanks in advance.
