Rerolling dice.

By Stoneface, in X-Wing Rules Questions

This situation came up the other night. While my opponent was half joking, I was caught short for an adequate response.

During a reroll, I exchanged my dice that rolled blanks with two from my pool of dice. My opponent said that technically I wasn't rerolling the dice but rolling new dice. Now, I've used the same pool of twelve dice (6 red and 6 green) for several years so I don't have special dice that I use for rerolls. Is his comment valid? Should I be rerolling the same dice I started the attack or defensive rolls with?

He too is superstitious but he uses the dice app. But he won't roll the dice if paint is showing. He will cancel dice that show a result until all blanks are showing. Lol!

it's in the rules reference, yes. under dice modification on page 9

"• Reroll: To reroll a die result, pick up the die and roll it again."

I'd say he's just being fussy. I don't think there's a real problem with what you're doing.

That said, all games are inherently social. Humoring him and not swapping dice until after the entire pool is cleared might be worthwhile.

I'm with @meffo ... your opponent is technically correct. Optimally, you should not substitute dice in the middle of a rolling sequence. I don't think it's a big deal, personally, and I'm not going to make a stink about it if my opponent does so (as long as it's not constantly slowing the game down). Obviously, there are exceptions... when trying to move the game along, if one die bounces off the table, I'll often grab a new one and roll it to establish the roll, THEN go to retrieve my stray die when my opponent is thinking about modifications or whatever.

Now, technically, one could also argue that you shouldn't even substitute dice in the middle of a round, either. I've seen some players bring 20+ dice to every game, then spend downtime constantly side-rolling their dice to "check for better results." It's superstitious nonsense at best, and can easily devolve into slow playing.

As much as it might be 'technically' correct, I don't enjoy the spirit of it RAW.

As long as it's not slowing the game down I couldn't care less. I've seen the Warhammer crowd will use different dice when they get a 1 result. As long its not something dodgy like someones lucky die they've pulled from their pocket, it's all good in my book. I bring all the dice I own because I'm not interested in making a super elite pool of dice. and most people aren't, roll and let re roll.

Fun fact, I have started to become slightly superstitious about dice, I started the game at 0% superstitious, dice were dice, I know some could be badly balanced, but dice are dice'. Now I find myself sensing for then best ones to roll.

I've said that a few times on some rulings myself.

This guy has historically bad dice. In one small tourney, between rounds, he bought three new packs of dice to replace the ones he started with. It didn't help.

Jeez. What mummy did your opponent tick off? 😬

The "D" word is filtered, apparently.

I don't know but I've witnessed it first hand. Never kept track but it sure seemed like his results were far outside normal distribution. Even rolling the same dice his opponent was using, his results were horrible. I'm sure that everyone has had a 5 dice roll go south but to see it happen three times in one game you begin to wonder if there's voodoo dice somewhere with pins stuck in them.

I recently ran a 4x T-70 list, all with Heroic. I too have cursed dice. Some games I've had Heroic trigger 7 times, sometime with my first roll of the game. Seriously 😐

See, my confirmation bias is exactly the opposite. I put Heroic on my squad, and it almost NEVER triggers. Then I get fed up, and pull Heroic for Crack Shot for the next game, and bam... blanks for days.

I keep thinking back to the time I went out and bought an umbrella after like 3 days of rain, and then the rain stopped later that day.

By "pool" of dice, I'm just going to assume they weren't in a salt bath, sunny sides up.

Otherwise, I'd have to go with the guy. 😂

Easy over in butter.

Well, if you can do this consistently, you have a good way to make it stop raining.
