Best Materials for making a good Desert/Snowy maps?

By ArcticJedi, in Terrain Building

So I'm hoping to start by making myself a Clone Wars Rhen Var/Korriban maps. I was wondering what materials or paints I should use for snow/sand, Jedi/Sith ruins, and for making hills/cliffs? What kind of terrain would want for these maps? Should I make my terrain locked or modular? Should I order mats? if so, what mats should I use? What should I get first?

Any insight will be welcome.

Go on youtube and find 'Mel the terrain tutor'

Will do, any other places I should look at?

I'd recommend starting with a mat. Find one you like, be it from FLG, Table War (FAT Mat), or the Fifth Trooper mat, and go from there. That way you can make your terrain match your mat, and you can start playing pretty much immediately. I'd keep the pieces modular, so you don't get locked into a single way of setting up the table.

I think for materials, you could probably make something interesting out of foam and drywall Spackle. That's what I used for my desert town buildings, and it worked great. I think something similar could work to make stone ruins, or even rocky hills if you use the right paint.

Convincing snow is trickier. Snow that looks good often isn't particularly durable as a gaming surface. I'm not trying to dissuade you, but you might consider pushing that back until you've a little more experience.

A desert environment is pretty easy to mimic, natural materials are easy to come by (sand & rocks), and it can be made quite durable through a variety of techniques.

Buy a desert system from Geo-Hex.
