New obstacles and stuff

By Wayne Argabright, in X-Wing

Would be cool if the new obstacles had their printed effects on one side. I find it hard enough to keep track of the current ones. Just a suggestion I may just do it on my own..

A reference card may be better. I can’t believe I would lament an FFG game having LESS cardboard, but not having those old reference cards for things like bombs and obstacle effects made me realize how much I relied on them.

Putting them on the flip side of the obstacle would be a bad idea, IMHO, since you have to lift up the obstacle to be reminded what it does.

That being said, I get that keeping track of multiple obstacles may get confusing in the heat of the game, but Gas Clouds aren’t super difficult to remember. Skip action if you move through it, obstructed attacks receive an extra die (like all obstacles) and flip a blank to an evade.

I believe they intentionally left it off cards so they can possibly change what the obstacles do at a different time. Such as adding Ion to gas clouds or something like that.

I think this game is very much in need of a nice reference card or more like a sheet in my thinking. Page 20 of the rulebook and pages 21-22 of The Rules Reference would be great. And an easy obstacle and bombs/mines reference once the new card packs arrive with additional bombs seems kind of necessary.

They could make it a download and give it versions and updates and such. Change it as they like.

I wish they built it into the card database in the app. The FAQ and rules reference could be integrated as well. It would make it easier and ensure were looking at the most recent documents.

Yeah I miss those old cards.

When I had a list I was sticking with, I would keep most of the relevant reference cards with it. If either my opponent or I had a question about what the bombs did, I had it right there.

I didn't have to pull out my phone open the kindle app, open the rules ref, find the right page...which doesn't take all that long (if the phone cooperates and you know what section of the rules ref you need to see), but it's not as quickly at hand.

But I get that it's hard to match the cards to the living document thing they have going....

that as well as some rules reference would be nice. Right now the app should have replaced the cards to create less clutter, but instead it is often so problematic that most players would just use a 3rd party app and hope that app doesn't get C&D out of existence.

The official squad-builder is such a failure. I keep using it but they just got that whole thing so very wrong other than you can make and save squads with it.

At this point I'd just like the web-based app to stop asking me to download the app that isn't available for my Kindle.

Absolutely!

Reference cards are cute and new players love having them.

For medium players, a big compiled reference sheet!!

We should really push FFG to make both of these.

Special tokens effects (tractor, ion, strain, deplete). Obstacle effects, bomb effects.

What new obstacles? Wasn't there 9 different types of asteroid in 1.0? The only thing I'm seeing that adds new obstacle effects are the environment cards...

I'm assuming he means things like the Gas Clouds, Debris Fields and Loose Cargo/Spare Parts.

1.0 had 12 obstacles and 6 debris fields total. The core set reprinted 3 asteroids and 3 debris clouds, so this environmental pack will presumably reprint the remainder.

Maybe. That isn't what I picked up from the tread title, op, and the conversation so far though.

For reference just incase someone is wondering where I got the list of what is in the "Never Tell Me The Odds" Obstacles pack, they have the contents posted on the product page for the pack: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/x-wing-second-edition/products/never-tell-me-odds-obstacles-pack/

During the “ask me anything,” it was confirmed that the gas clouds are differently shaped than the ones found in the squadron boxes currently.

We aren’t sure about the others yet.

Good point on the obstacles. However, the Fully Loaded Devices is adding Ion Bombs and Cluster Mines. https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/x-wing-second-edition/products/fully-loaded-devices-pack/

Page 21 of the Rules Reference is "the bombs page." Two more devices being added for eight total seems like maybe it should be a little less buried to get the list of what the things do. When you equip a device in the official squad-builder only the device card is shown. The device card doesn't give you the effects of the device. This is relevant game information and it isn't as easy to get to as it should be.

I'm calling for a new section on the Product Page under support: Player Resources. The first item should be "Device Effects Sheet" to include page 21 of the Rules Reference and the new devices in "Fully Loaded Devices." And the second should be "Object Effects Sheet" to include pages 22 and 23 of the Rules Reference and asteroids and debris fields as well. Maybe with pics of all.

Also Device effects need to be available in the official squad-builder, as well as the condition effects.

You can just write your own reminders and put them at the dark side of the obstacles.

I wonder if they have the 1.0 red box obstacles. I got the 1.0 Force Awakens and 2.0 core. Would love some new shapes.

It looks that here come 3 new gas clouds. The 3 debris and 9 asteroids are the old obstacles not released yet on present edition.

Were red and blue 1.0 core boxes obstacles the same?

Nope. They were different, making a total of 12 asteroids. We had 6 different debris, 3 in the Decimator expansion pack and the other 3 in the YT-2400.

Core 2.0 includes 3 rocks and 3 debris of those old packs. No we're having all the original 12+6 obstacles plus 6 gas clouds.

Yup, it is sad. I have tried to make use of the custom formats for my alternative format but it is like trying to use a plastic knife as a box cutter.

The only reasonable explanation I can come up with is they had information that a great many folks just sort of hit and run on the squad-builder so a lot of things we'd like to see weren't "important." The most likely one is they just didn't spec it out to the programmers properly and then the budget and timeframe for the whole thing fell apart.

yup, and it is still a mess because there is no budget to fix it. however at this stage I may say the only way to fix it is to replace it. I mean it doesn't save lists after the formats get an update anyways so it would be no difference to the players that still use it.

I don’t know what’s wrong with yours, I go through after each update and erase squads that are over 200 points. Now I’m by NO means saying the official app doesn’t have a great many issues, that’s just not one of them.

Same here. Early on I logged in and all my lists were gone but I got them back with "custom" as the format. Now when the points change your saved lists are just calculated to the new points. I then either delete or edit or kick the can down the road.

There is a lot to complain about with the builder but it does save your lists and seems to allow you a good number of saved lists.

For the most part, I like the official squad builder. It looks nice, has a solid UI (although I wish it let you change pilot cards without removing the entire ship), and helps you track both your collection and what packs you need to buy to get specific cards. It would be nice if the card database included the reference cards and game rules, true. But my biggest complaint about the official squad builder is that while it tracks your collection, it doesn't allow you to limit your lists to only what is in your collection.
