Quick Build Tournament

By Sk3tch, in X-Wing

We'll be holding a one off QB tournament later this year. Apart from Starkiller spam which I'll limit by limiting the chassis or pilot or something similar. Is there anything crazy to watch out for mainly rules wise from a TO point of view?

I guess there will be more and more roll offs for init and final salvo than usual because it's effectively out of 8 points.

All the PDFs seem to be out of date and the YASB 2 is missing a load as well but there's other sources for that.

The PDFs aren’t out of date per se - the builds are all legal. They’re just not adding the new quick builds to them, which seems fine because the point of them was to cover conversion kit content not net new chassis.

Sounds like a lot of fun- report back in how it goes! I somewhat like the QB format because it lets us play stuff we normally couldn’t (like Bistan ion turret out the Uwing side door 🤣 )

That Vader and Sun fac are both a bit much for that format. We just ban them, but you could also edit them heavily.

Vader is largely a result of Supernatural Reflexes becoming eye-wateringly expensive. At the time the quick build was created, it was priced at 12 points...

He is immensely nasty and - unlike the other TIE/x1 quick builds - doesn't feel like he has any dead weight on him.

Spamming Starkiller Base Pilots is less of an issue - yes, you can get 4. But you also can't have Hyperspace Tracking Data, or indeed anything else, equipped to them. They're far from the only ship available in larger numbers than normal - Sienar-Jaemus Engineers being available as a heavy swarm of 4 are quite scary, too.

Good luck! Quick Builds are great fun - enjoy!

Yes. The two important things you need to figure out are:

  • what you're doing about the two-fers.

For the sake of example, a legal TIE/sk quick build is " Planetary Sentinel (Conner Nets) x 2 ". This costs 3 threat.

What happens if one - and only one - of the two TIE/sk is destroyed? Does the player receive no credit? 3 points? 1.5 points?

This gets even more awkward where a card contains two ships which are not identical - an obvious example here is a Custom YT-1300 and Escape Craft pairing. If you have Lando and L3-37 (4 threat), what do you get for shooting down L3?

  • whether you're allowing enhanced quick builds

Many 'alt-art' quick build cards are essentially identical to the 'normal' quick build card with the upgrades printed onto the card (like the Black Squadron Ace). But there are a few which are unique in their upgrades. A good example is Iden Versio - in her enhanced quick build form equipped with Proton Torpedoes and magically gaining the Target Lock action. Now the thing is, these cards were participation prizes at specific events. Which means that not every player out there has access to them. They do not appear on the .PDF quick builds and are frankly 'better' in many cases than their 'normal' version. Are these legal for use? If so.....how do you cope with the fact that you may be giving people who went to' XYZ previous game night kit' an advantage over those who didn't?

Tempted to go 5 threat on him.

Oh gods, that's going to be a headache.

I plan to link the FFG PDFs and the basic QB cards that come with the ships as the only available builds. partly because it's easier for book keeping. Seems like the simplest way to make a list, it's already across 2 separate sources as it is, I don't want to add more sources. Although I think I might have to do my list as it is. Everyone must have access to the same builds.

Thanks for the pointers, exactly what I was looking for.

Indeed. It's not an insurmountable problem, but it's one you need to have an answer you'll stick to before the day. That goes double with someone like me who generally prefers a 5-ship 'heavy' swarm, because the best way to do that with TIE strikers is 2 3-threat 'cards' of two planetary sentinels each, and then one 2-threat card of one of the named 'aces'.

That throws in a third problem scenario of killing one TIE/sk from each 'card'. Does that count as wiping out one 'card's' worth, or is the 'card' (and its points) tied to specific pilots?

It's almost like FFG forgot about Quick build.

You can find almost all of the quick builds here: http://infinitearenas.com/quickBuildDeck/# It looks like he hasn't added the latest wave's quick builds yet, but it has all of them through wave 4.

I would recommend making each threat worth 4 points making a list equal to 32 points. This means that a 3 threat, 2 ship quick build card will be worth 12 points total and if 1 ship is at half-health it will award 3 points to the other player. It allows you to always evenly divide the points for half-damage and multiple ships. You can also add some tweaks or exceptions such as making the Nashta Pup worth 2 points and Bossk worth 10 points in his 3 threat quickbuild. I did this for a quick-build draft league and while it took the players a little bit of time to figure out, it made keeping track of the scores a lot easier than dealing with floating point numbers.

You're right, I haven't gotten around to updating the Quick Build Deck for Wave 5 for printing out the whole deck, but I have updated QBSB for Wave 5. @Sk3tch if you would like to use QBSB for your tournament but it's missing some feature you need, let me know and I'll work on it.

Excellent idea. I think I'll use something like this.

That's great thank you. If everything's in one place it makes it far easier organise.
