How fun is the Falcon?

By TheHumanHydra, in X-Wing

Thanks for all the answers, everyone. Sounds like I should maybe reconsider leaving that Falcon behind.

Just to throw my two cents in:

I made the top 8 (and cut) at a Hyperspace Trial a few weeks ago with Lando/Niem+Wedge+ Norah.

I lost to the 1 seed, and tournament champion to a near mirror match. Lando/Niem+Luke+Braylen.

Falcon is a good ship.

Depending on the price, you may consider just getting the 2E version. Unless you're converting several ships, a Conversion Kit isn't necessarily the best value.

Also, note that the Scum Falcon is a completely new, 2E ship, and is not in the Conversion Kits.

I've been using the Fly Casual X-Wing Simulator (a few threads up) to practice with the Falcon. And it's a fun ship to fly. Although, the larger ship base did make it harder to figure out maneuvering near the edge. I've finally gotten to the point where I'm no longer flying the Falcon off the table accidentally due to starting to turn too late. And I'm finding Princess Leia as a crew member helps a lot for such positioning issues. Being able to reduce the difficulty of the "bank and turn around" maneuver is oh so helpful. Don't know it's official name yet. The fact she lets all your ships do red maneuvers as a white maneuver at the same time? That's extra gravy, and very useful.

Currently I'm messing around with Lando as pilot, Han as a gunner, and using Cluster Missiles. Oh, and Snap Shot as a Talent upgrade. Seems to be working out pretty well. I tend not to Boost the Falcon much with that config, favoring blue maneuvers more then anything (naturally). As such Engine Upgrade seems like it wouldn't help much.

The "bank and flip" is the Segnor's Loop (S-Loop). The "hard turn and flip" is the Tallon Roll (T-Roll).

As to the build, I'm worried it has too many bonus attack effects. Keep in mind you can only do one Bonus Attack per round. Snap Shot, Han Gunner's Init 7 attack, and the 2nd attack from Cluster Missiles are all bonus attacks.

Also, you're right that Lando doesn't really need Engine Upgrade. It's not terrible, since it'd allow a lot more flexibility in dial planning, but the points can often be spent better somewhere else.

Yeah, been noticing that. But hey, that's why I'm field testing various builds. Trying to find what works, what doesn't, and what I absolutely hate. Han as a pilot seems nice, but I think I prefer Lando's pilot ability since it lets you focus and rotate turret in the same turn.

EDIT: Actually, the last match I played was kind of funny. Han kept circling the map while the remaining imperial tie fighters endlessly chased him. Occasionally there was a Benny Hill style chase around an asteroid, but half the match was the Imps chasing Han Solo around the map and he blasts them repeatedly.

EDIT 2: Is anyone else finding Nien Nunb to be rather effective on a rebel Lando piloted YT-1300? I'd thought being able to trigger Lando's pilot ability with 3 bank maneuvers would be good. But I'm finding it to be more effective then I thought it would be. I'm also finding Han Solo (gunner)+Cluster Missiles to be more effective then I initially thought. Not always, of course. But if I can split the enemy up into two groups it can be quite nasty. Have Han fire at enemies in the rear arc, then unleash cluster missiles to (potentially) hit two other ships. Granted, jousting in an attempt to use Cluster Missiles is a foolish move. Actually, I'm finding I can't line up the Falcon often enough to fire missiles to begin with. But the times I've managed to fly through the middle of a formation, Han's been pure gold. As has his occasionally letting me take out Vader or other Init 6 ships before they can shoot.

My last match I ended up completely trashing Vader via trick shot and rolling 4 crits while Vader got all blanks for defense. Then the two crits that got through Vader's shields were Direct Hits. Not bad for a first volley.
