New player seaking advice

By Faerie1979, in X-Wing

Anyone getting into a miniature war game is, or at least should be, well aware of how expensive they are. Even the cheap ones can end up costing you a lot of money due to the boosters/expansions being so cheap because what you get is random. I mean, sure you only *need* enough X-Wing ships to form a 200 point squadron. Maybe two squadrons if you're supplying the opposing force too. But who's going to limit them self to just that? No, you'll buy more models then the minimum needed so you can run variable battle groups rather then the same static group. Or because you want to play larger games.

****, if the local scene hadn't dried up, I'd still be expanding my 40k army. I can already run a decent army for the point value we would typically run. But I still 'need' more fast attack and heavy support in my army. Maybe another scout squad too.

Question: If I'm running Lando with C-3PO as crew, it looks like I'd be able to Calculate and Evade when doing a blue maneuver. Which leads me to wonder... Would C-3PO's ability to double rolled evades if I correctly guess how many before rolling even trigger if I got the evade via dice modding?

As an example, I guess "one" when using C-3PO's ability, then roll an Evade icon. Because I correctly guessed how many I'd get, I get an extra Evade icon thus can avoid two hits instead of one. That's obvious.

Later I guess "One", and roll a Focus icon. But I'd done a Blue maneuver (such as 3 forward) and thus was able to take an Evade action in addition to the Calculate action. I use my Evade token to change the result from Focus to Evade... Does C-3PO's ability double my results, or do I still only get one Evade due to actually rolling something different?

EDIT: Yes, I know C-3PO's ability only adds one extra evade if you correctly guess how many you'll roll. But since the Falcon only has Agility 1, this effectively doubles your potential results.

Edit: Blah nevermind that, I forgot they took the zero option out (left over 1E brain)

And then misunderstood the question. No, you will not double your results, C-3PO only cares about what you rolled, if you guess 1, and roll a blank or focus, he does not add a result. You can then use your Evade token to modify your roll to 1 Evade result total.

I'm gonna go shut the **** up and get some coffee now

Oh gods, I think my friend and I are getting too use to how we fly against each other. Our current match is going into it's 6th hour, most of which has been spent dancing each other around with nobody able to line up a shot. He agreed to help me test the first 100 points of both my planned Rebel Alliance list and Galactic Empire list. We're both getting tired, so decided to call it quits. But here's the state of the table as of when we mutually decided to declare the match a draw.

State of the table

My ship

Ships my friend was running

In the span of five hours shots were fired five times. Three times by me, and twice by my friend. We could keep going, but he has work in the morning. It does show one thing though. These two setups are both very mobile. I'm starting to see why Supernatural Reflexes costs so much. Every time Iden tried lining up a flanking shot I'd boost or barrel roll to either get out of firing arc or push things into range 3. Assuming my planned maneuver wasn't going to take me out of the firing arc on it's own. Every time I'd manage to line up a shot on Black Ace Squadron Ace he'd manage to soak it up using Evasive, a focus token, or both. Every time I thought I'd get a shot off on Iden he'd predict what I was going to do then manage to circle just out of my firing arc will be with Afterburners. Actually, all the damage inflicted was caused by him flying into rocks while trying to evade me or circle behind me. I flew into my fair share of rocks too, but kept rolling blanks each time.

6 hours is exceptionally long, but you have teched out all three ships very defensively.

Supernatural Luke is very hard to catch, and very hard to kill, especially for TIE fighters. Luke should have had an easy time getting shots on those TIEs though, because he moves after both of them.

In the picture you sent, if luke 1 banks to the left, there is no way for the black squadron ace to avoid getting shot. Luke can safely take a target lock and then spend lock and force to modify his attack and vaporise the TIE. Iden will probably get a shot at Luke, but that doesn't matter because R2D2 can recover any damage you take while you circle back around to get a shot on Iden. It's ok to take some damage if you are doing more damage to your opponent.

Actually, I'd planned a banking boost using Supernatural Reflexes then hard 2 turn and focusing to try getting a shot off on Iden. Mostly because I wanted to try avoiding getting flanked by Iden due to Outmaneuver. That, and I still hadn't managed to burn her damage negation charge. Before cleaning up I looked at the other dials, and Iden was going to end up in a good position to flank while the Ace could pop off a range 3 shot. Probably wouldn't have done much in the long run thanks to R2 D2, but that would have had me running for a turn or two while disarmed. Also, I wouldn't have had a shot with how the movement was going to end up, with or without a boost.

Part of the problem was we kept getting dangerously close to the edge while jockying for position. That, and constantly trying to dodge around space rocks in the middle of the table. The ties had better maneuverability in tight areas, but I had good enough mobility to frequently get out of danger too. But every time we repositioned we'd end up unable to shoot due to one of us out guessing the other. Again. Good match, but excessively long.

There is a reason that tournament matches are 75 minutes. Six hours is longer than most 40k games I've played, including newbie games were I was learning the rules. Wow. Good for you for working out movement and positioning, but...just wow. That is a lot of time.

@Faerie1979 yeah, despite what you might think, playing with fewer points can sometimes tend to make the games last longer, because neither side has enough firepower to do much to the other player’s ships, exactly as your game demonstrated. Imagine that same game if you had also had the falcon circling around taking shots at TIEs, and if your friend had more ships flying about. Neither of you would have been able to dodge ALL the arcs, and soon one of you would be able to destroy a ship or two. Then you’d be able to bring your entire list to bear against the opponent’s remaining ships and clean up relatively easy.

So just wait until you can both fly full 200pt lists, and then set a time limit for yourselves. Somewhere around 75-120 minutes while you’re learning, and gradually shorten your time limits down to the standard 75.

Side note: focusing is probably the most useless action Luke can do, since he regenerates force so quickly whenever he’s targeted. The only time you should be focusing with Luke is if you already have a target lock on the ship you want to shoot, and barrel-rolling won’t get you into a better position.

My friend already spent way too much on the game, giving him two of every Galactic Empire ship currently released for 2.0 (4 for the Tie LN Fighter). He was limiting himself to the two tie fighters in my initial 200 point Empire list so I could field test the ship builds, just as I was field testing my build for Skywalker I'll be using with the list. And the lists are built with only what I have now and have on order. I'm thinking of getting a second Core Set next month, maybe another Rebel Alliance ship and Tie LN Fighter as well. Either that, or maybe grab the conversion kit and get the second Core Set next year. So many pilots and upgrades I want that are currently exclusive to the upgrade kits. That, and the extra tokens & dice the core set and upgrade kit would provide would be nice to have.

So, picked up the A/SF 01 B Wing today for Alliance. Mostly cause that's all the store had available. I'd been looking to get a Y wing or maybe pick up the T-65 X-Wing expansion for the additional pilots and upgrades. Oh, and 3rd ship. here's the list I was flying after buying it.

Lando Calrissian (80)
Nien Nunb (5)

Luke Skywalker (62)
R5 Astromech (4)
Servomotor S-Foils (0)

Ten Numb (48)
Total: 199

It seems (mostly) to do all right. And considering how bad the B-Wing's maneuver dial is and it's low agility, the ship seems remarkably durable. Assuming I can avoid jousting with it, of course. Any tips on how to fly this, or how to build the list better? Not sure if I'm better served going fewer ships and more upgrades, or if I should look into putting an upgrade on Ten Numb rather then Luke and Lando.
