FF Painting Set

By Barrierboy, in Painting

Hey there everybody,

So I’m finally getting into Legion next Friday with the drop of the new Core set. I’ve always wanted to get my mini’s painted and I’m going to take the dive and finally learn to paint mini’s. I have a massive 100+ warmachine army that’s I’ve always been afraid of messing up but with the legion model, they seem to be good mini’s to kinda learn on. But I have a few questions:

1. I saw FF was gonna be dropping paint sets of their own, have those dropped yet?

2. I also saw there were “factions” sets. With there be ones for the republic also?

3. If the paint is still awhile away, will Citadel paints work as well(I have a 15+ colors for the WM army I have)?

4. Do we know if there is a guide/FF published a painting guide for their models? Exp: For the stormtrooper the armor is this color white, with this color black while the blaster has this color brown for the base and this gray for the barrel etc, kinda how citadel/privateer press has paint guides.

Thank you all for the help.

1. Not yet.

2. No/not that we know of/not yet.

3. They'll work fine. I think most of us use a variety of paints. I use Citadel, Vallejo, and Army Painter myself.

4. No, there isn't. There are a few individual unit painting guides by third parties, but FFG hasn't put out anything official.

May I recommend the pinned thread at the top of this forum which is curated by the wonderful Sorastro. He's, in my opinion, the official FFG paint guide.

H e has a myriad of excellent Legion painting viseos, as well as dozens of other videos for Imperial Assault, whose techniques and paint/color choices are easily ported over to Legion.

And via his website and his Patreon page, you can access PDF guides to most of the units that didn't receive the full video treatments.

Check out his B1 Battle Droid tutorial to get a feeling for his style with the Clone Wars.

Yeah, since Sorastro was commissioned by FFG and his YouTube videos all go through an approval process at LucasFilm, I don’t think it’s a matter of opinion. His videos are the official painting guide for Legion. Also, his unofficial (but still excellent) videos for Imperial Assault are great for learning different methods and techniques for painting Star Wars characters.

Unsolicited advice for beginner painters to follow: feel free to ignore me. Sorastro is very modest about his own work, but you should know going into it that your models aren’t going to look like his. That’s okay. They will still look great on the battlefield. Certainly better than gray plastic. So don’t worry about it. Don’t worry about messing them up. Don’t do what I did and paint, strip and repaint the same three models ten times trying to get them “right.” And despite the fact that they are basically two colors, don’t start with the stormtroopers - they are tough to do well and imperfections show easily. Other than that, just remember to thin your paints with a little water or thinner medium and then have fun.
