I don’t know anything about Rebecca Roanhouse. She’s a very new author, and released three novels in just over a year. Rapid releases concern me as usually there’s a drop in quality to match. That said, she did win some awards and get nominated for more. I'll give it a shot.

He ended up - last time we saw him - as a fighter pilot instructor. Making him some sort of flight controller - either co-ordinating, or improving initiative, might work.

I'd prefer not to mess with initiative. You could maybe do something that allowed a resistance ship to do a Starviper bendy-barrel roll? That might be interesting, either as a coordinate ability, or a charge-based ability.

I'm fine with messing with Initiative as long as it's based on non-recurring charges. Something that makes it a tactical choice when you use it.
