Liana Flare's Calypso (a 3D Printable starship)

By Makwiesel, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

My daughter's character Liana Flare, a Chiss Smuggler, has a ship that she's wanted to see in the real world for a long time so I spun it up on Autocad and 3D printed it in Star Wars Legion and X-Wing scales for use in our Edge of the Empire games.

You can find it here on thingiverse https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3895826 and print one of your own if you find it useful.

Nice. You should UV map it and make an OBJ. file version of it for use in 3D render programs, like DAZ Studio or Poser, and put it up on ShareCG.com .

I don't want to sound like an idiot but better to sound like one than be one... I don't know what that is or does- would it be of use to people? I think I can export as an .obj but the UV map I never heard of...

UV maps are what's used to make textures on a 3D model for rendering, video, and games.

@Tramp Graphics is a graphic artist who uses daz, @Makwiesel could just give Tramp Graphics permission to make the uv map and call it a day.

Hey if you can do that Tramp Graphics, I'm happy to let you rock it. DO you need anything other than the files in Thingiverse?

I exported as a .obj file. Tramp Graphice feel free to do what you do if you so desire!

It'll depend upon the geometry of the mesh. If the mesh is made up of quads, that's no problem. If its a huge number of triangles, that's another matter.

If it's difficult why would you ask someone with no experience to do it when you aren't willing to do it yourself?

That's cool you can see the mesh I uploaded- it is a lot of triangles. If it's too hard to do, no matter- thanks for looking at the possibility anyway!

It's difficulty is based upon its geometry. I make all my meshes using quads.

That's what I figured. 😞

A true statement but it doesn't answer the question, why would you who have some transferable experience ask someone who has *none* to do something that you yourself aren't willing to do?

Well, for one, it's not his project.

Meanwhile, creating a model for anything beyond 3D printing wasn’t Makwiesel’s project, either. /shrug

Well he's not being told that he's selfish for not doing so, so...

Tramp's not "selfish" for not doing it, but because he triedto get someone else with less/no expierence to do it for him.

Did he ask them to do it for him, or did he suggest that they might want to do it. Because I interpreted it as, "hey, you might want to try doing this"

Tramp does a lot of cgi modeling, particularly star wars, so yeah he was asking for something he wanted to use personally.

It's cool that you mastered the Sense force power so well you can read his motives because that is not how I read it at all.

This isn't saying he won't do it, he's explaining that one is more difficult than the other - and in my interpretation -giving Makweisel advice in case he wants to attempt it in the future

It's not space magic, it's experience. I've known Mike Trampert in real life since 2003 or 2004. Met him at church, gamed with him in person, sent him birthday and Christmas (both in December) gifts every year until Dec. 2018, etc. Point is I know him well enough to read his motivations better than he can (he's biased in his own favor).

Hey everyone,

I'm not sure where the wires mixed up and this became contentious. I'm happy to have the feedback I got and don't look at it as a demand or slight. I built the ship model just to have something I could print out to give my daughter for her character. The other options I hadn't even considered and didn't know were a thing. Now that I know it's a possibility I'm figuring out how to work that in for next time.

Thank you to everyone who offered advice and guidance and to those who stood up for me thinking I had been wronged.

I'm working on another ship now and will post it up when I complete it- but it's triangles because I started it before the Calypso was completed. I hope to find you all in a discussion about the new ship- and when I add my own landing gear to this one!

Thank you for your support everyone!
