So how *does* the SSD show up in RitR?

By xanderf, in Star Wars: Armada

I seem to recall some interview or Q&A or something around the time RitR was being announced, and its lower 200-pt format was discussed, that there was ways for things to occasionally expand your fleets. And the question of the SSD was brought up, with a suggestion that it could appear in some battles.

Now that we have it in-hand, obviously a few of the objectives do have that potential to have temporary allies joining your fleet to increase its size in that battle.

However...I don't see anything in the campaign that specifically allows for a Super Star Destroyer to show up. Unless I'm missing something?

For the final battle of the campaign, players have a few options to change out their fleets by spending leftover resource tokens. One of those options is to replace ships and squadrons with a huge ship. It can't bring you above 250 points, though, so the Assault variant is probably a trap, and the command variant probably won't have room for more than a tie fighter by the time the (nigh)-mandatory upgrades have been added.

You could spend an Ally token though and have an SSD with a fleet cap of 295 points.

They do have rules for expanded fleets. Do like the idea of starting out at 200 and taking it past 250. Would make sense to do that to go to the SSD.

From RitR Rules, page 26, under "Command Ship Upgrade".

Quote

"Each team can replace some of their forces with more awe-inspiring warships worthy of the final battle by resolving one of the following effects:

  • Huge Ship: The team may spend one repair yards token and two resource tokens. Then one of this team's players may choose to remove a number of their ships, squadrons, and upgrade cards from their fleet and replace those forces with one huge ship worth a number of fleet points up to the value of the ships and squadrons that player removed.
  • Large Ships: The team may spend one repair yards token and one resource token. Then up to two of the team's players may choose to remove a number of their ships, squadrons, and upgrade cards from their fleet and replace those forces with one large ship worth a number of fleet points up to the value of the ships and squadrons those players removed.

When a player resolves either effect, that player's team may spend one ally token to add 45 fleets points to that player's available total. If they do, that players fleet value can exceed 250 points. After resolving either effect, the new total value of each player's fleet must be recorded in their fleet point roster. Any title cards or veteran tokens on ships or squadrons that are removed are lost. A ship added to a player's fleet does not receive a veteran token. Upgrade cards that player has not removed can be equipped to the added ship, if able."

Note that replacing ships, squads, and upgrades with a ship does NOT, by the rules, allow you to also purchase new upgrades for that new ship. Only upgrades you had in your fleet that you did NOT sacrifice to pay for the new ship can be equipped. The reason for that is rather obvious. To get upgrades in the campaign, you have to win battles at specific planet sites. Those upgrades have to be earned. The Ally token effect allows to bring in an allied ship or squadron group like normal, and gives you the right to temporarily exceed the 250-pt cap just as the Ally token normally does.

True, but Ally tokens only provide a naked raider, gozanti, or a couple of irregular squadrons. That being said, 2 Decimators seems like a decent escort.

So perhaps I am interpreting the rules a little differently. I am specifically looking at the final battle under "Command Ship Upgrade." I read this as a way to use the ally token and use the 45 points toward the Super Star Destroyer.

I do agree that normally, the Ally token works as you point out.

Nice catch. Good to know.

Man I was really hoping for a SSD-specific mission. Oh well.

I think you are right. That means you could leave an extra 45 points of ships, squadrons, and upgrades in your fleet when doing the replacement. Then you could put a few upgrades on the SSD or ISD. Thanks for that interpretation!

As was I, but the fact that the SSD can still get to the table at the end is pretty sweet.

Imagine how long it would take to get the Executor II out under Corellian Conflict after a few rounds of stockpiling resources... :)
