How do you store and transport your Huge ships?

By heychadwick, in X-Wing Epic Play

I have an impressive sized box filled with my weekly X-wing stuff. It's got wheels and a handle and I need all the space for my regular stuff and HotAC variants. I don't know how to carry my Huge ships these days.

I have two large Plano trays that hold my two Imp and two Rebel ships. I have a small toolbox that holds my C-ROC and random crap. I guess I am going to carry them loose?

Don't bring everything everytime.

I being republic and resistance OR I bring Scum and Rebels but not both.

I don't have a good method. Each huge ship is in a cardboard box I cut to the appropriate size (much smaller than the plastic they come in), and all 4 boxes fit in a LEGO shopping bag. That may have to change, but it works for now.

I've got a foam thing, holding my Gozanti, 2 lambdas, 1 YT-1300, 1 YT-2400, 1 Decimator and the rebel transport. I've just got a raider, i'll transport in the box it came in...

I have battle foam trays for my huge ships. Those go in a rolling cart that I modified so my smaller ship organizers lock and stack onto.

I have a battle foam tray for my CR-90, Raider, and Rebel Transport. I haven't spent the money to get a second foam tray for the Gozanti and CROC yet.

I never know what we are going to play each time. Often, we do HotAC or Flight Group Alpha. I am the one to being all the enemy ships. I also never play the same list very often and always want to change on the fly.

I am running out of trunk room.

I can't afford foam, but even if I could, I would still need to carry it in something. I have the Plano trays and need something else to put those Plano in.

I just learned about 'soccer mom wagons.' could you use something like this?

I've seen some at conventions, using those to wheel their haul around..

I keep my epic ships in the extra deep Harbor Freight Storage Cases with a bit of foam (can't be too thick). It easily fits the Cr90 and Medium Transports or the Raider and Gozanti. They can fit a lot of stuff in there.

I could've used something like that a year or three ago, but what I actually use now is bigger. I'll have to take a picture tonight and show you guys. It is huge. It also doesn't have room for my Epic stuff unless I take something else out.

It's also possible to buy maybe one foam tray that can hold several Epic ships....

I have some Plano deep trays that can hold 2 Epic ships per tray, but it would be better to get something that can hold more than 2 per ship. At this point, I either need something to hold my Epic trays or a better system. Also, my C-ROC is on it's own as I cant fit it in one of the trays.

I admittedly have some battlefoam trays. My wife made a surprise gift one year for custom fit trays. I haven't kept up as it's too expensive to keep every ship in a custom foam tray, but I'll tell you that huge ship tray is great. Contains my Corvette, GR75 and Raider all nicely tucked in and protected. As I only own four of the huge ships, and I don't use the C-ROC all that often even then, it's wonderfully convenient to bring on case that holds all my classic Rebel and Imperial fighters and those three main huge ships.

I went looking on their website, but didn't find a tray that could fit ALL the Epic ships. There was one that kept 3 of them. That would probably help, but I saw it was $25 for one tray! I might be better off buying another $10 Plano tray for the CROC and use an old book bag.

It's not the cheapest option, of course. I like the foam as it keeps things from banging around inside a plastic case. There is less fragile bits on those big ships, but since I broke a B-Wing in a plano-type box I've hated loose ships rattling around. An extra $15 pays for itself after the first couple of pieces need to be glued back on.

I discourage any "stacked box" type system. Local often shows up with two paper boxes and a couple of smaller boxes that won't fit inside stacked on top. I expect disaster one of these days and keep pushing him to either bring less to the store or condense the packaging. All his ships are safely tucked into the original plastic blisters inside those big boxes, but he can hardly see around them as he walks. I really should take a picture of it someday, it's pretty wild.

It must take ages to get setup for a game. What a walking disaster!

Yes and no. He has lists prepared, but multiple and likes to have options if something better occurs to him

Let's see if I can post the pics here....

The far left has most of my Plano trays. I have 4 of them. One for Imp, Rebel, Scum, and the last for Asteroids, mines, Tie Bombers, Bombs, etc. The middle is my Star Flickers that is terrain for HotAC. Below that is my template tray, boxes with pilots and upgrades, my dials, binder for FGA. There is also my large based ships and First Order stuff under that. The right is more a free for all. The top box is my Flight Group Alpha stuff, my mission tokens, spar bases, and....a bunch of miscellaneous stuff.

No room for Epic.

That's the name!!! I was telling another local guy who knows Josh about that one.

@Darth Meanie will wreck you for putting those four words together. How often do you suddenly need a huge ship on the table that wasn't planned for? Can you just sort of collect a few shoe boxes and cut your own padding out of leftover stuff? Does it need to be in your everyday carry on? That foam tray from Battlefoam is pretty slim for managing three huge ships. Seriously, from one cheapskate to another... sometimes the extra money is worth your time and sanity. I made my own template tray, I make up Sir Willi's hangar boxes for fighters, but I'm not making my own huge ship storage.

Having just gained my first huge ship, this thread gains new meaning for me!

*attempts to attach the needless ship on painted table photo*

*File to large*

"Foiled again!"

You don't see any pictures? I do. I posted on home pc and my phone shows pictures. You don't see anything?

OK.... I'm not saying I'm NOT going to carry around my Epic. I just want a best solution. I have 2 of them in 2 deep Plano trays, but am debating on getting the 3rd. I have the trays, but nothing to put them in. I CAN get a bag, but wondered on a better option. Should I just get the 3rd or should I find a new solution?

Nope. Tried my computer and my phone. Nadda.

Relax. Take a deep breath. The best solution is the solution that works best for you. We've all got opinions, and huge ships aren't exactly something most people have much experience carting around. To be fair, I've carried my C-ROC into game night in a shoe box once or twice. The only wrong way is the way that gets your ship broken or lost.

Well....that's what I'm trying to figure out. What IS the best solution. I'm soliciting ideas. :)

Weird! I saw the pictures on my phone earlier today.

...Sure enough, I can still see them on the phone. I've been using Flickr, but after our last round of "how do I post pictures," I think I've convinced myself to make an imgur account. I just haven't done it yet.

stanley toolboxes (or harbour freight knockoffs) work well, as do tackleboxes.

the "Plano 1374 4-By Rack System 3700 Size Tackle Box" on amazon is amazing, holds 80+ small ships in the removable storage while 2 or 3 huge ships fit in top. the removable compartments mean if you want to swap factions or bring multiple games to a con its easy... for example I put 2 40k kill teams, my x-wing to go lists, and cards against humanity in mine all at once with no trouble
