Magic Upgrades not in the Core

By Thebearisdriving, in Genesys

Hello. Working on some home brew stuff, and in the process I've been adding several upgrades to the various spells in the Core Book.

However, when trying to balance some of these, I haven't been able to find anyone who's really done something comparable. Lots of redrafting of the magic system whole cloth, or fundamentally adjusting the attack spell (for whatever reason), but I haven't found many if any new upgrades.

So does anyone have favorite home brew upgrades for the various spells in the core? Are there any products on the Foundry that have some good upgrades (haven't looked at starcana, but that's a product I would imagine might have new upgrades)?

Thanks in advance.

I imagine you're probably already aware, but the Expanded Player's Guide will have some new talents and spell options for the magic system once it hits stores. You can pre-order now, btw!

Otherwise, what I've done at my table, is I've just grabbed existing upgrade options from different spells and brought them into different spells (using Empowered all over the place, for e example). Depending on the spell, the difficulty cost might fluctuate up or down, but it's easier to be sure the effect is balanced that way.

I am aware of the upcoming product, but sadly not in "the know" and I have no idea when it comes out or what those options will look like. So sadly not much use right now. Good looking out though.

What I was hoping for was to see what other people have done to expand the core spell options, and see if my ideas were balanced (as much as one home brew against others can be balanced, yeah?).

Appreciate the help.

Cool cool. This is pretty helpful. Are these yours, or just items that you've collected from around in different corners? Because there look like some overlapping areas in here.

We only know a few things, thanks to this article . But we do know there are three new magic actions: transform (which looks like druidic wild shape), mask (illusion magic) and predict (divination, maybe).

And, thanks to the above-linked article, we can see this: gns11_a2_preorder-cardfan.png

No new options that I can decipher, but it is blurry when zoomed in so we can't be sure. And the release date is Q4 2019: so anytime between today and New Years Eve!

Collected and some are mine.

The overlap stems from the fact that many roads lead to rome.

Interesting. I would have though "Mask" as a concept would have been folded into curse, and Transform into curse and augment (depending on whether beneficial or not). Thanks for the extra info. I feel like the FFG main page has been less than helpful about keeping up word on the players guide.

I figured. Since you've collected these, are there any of these that you've found particularly problematic on a table? Actions or upgrades?

Not sure how making yourself look different (or make another character/item look different) would fit under Curse, though. Curse reduces your ability dice, it doesn't change how things look .

This is pretty much what I've been saying since day 1, so you're preaching to the choir. But transform seems to give you the animal's form—characteristics, skills, abilities, silhouette, etc. Not just an increase of green dice. I'm intrigued to see how it actually works.

Yeah, considering this article is all we have (besides the GenCon annoucement) I'm saddened we don't have more news. But on the plus side, the release date is "Q4 2019", which started yesterday! So it's not too far away!

mostly i have used these to build specific "spell-scrolls" that the party found, instead of learning the full action.

some pc has picked up shroud and phasing, but the other actions so far remain npc/adversary only.

since even the polymorphs dont allow you to gain abilitities you dont have, except for more damage or flight (but no special abilities) it is rather the power level you have to scale.
