Gozanti or Raider

By Rickwilljames, in X-Wing Epic Play

So with all the Huge ships coming back, my interest is piqued. I plan to get one, but having no experience with Epic, I need help with what route to take.

I play Mostly Empire, and can only afford one. so i have a few questions about the two.

First off, I know 2.0 has been a whole different ball park than what we had, so any known strategies for huge ships may just be out the window, that being said, which ship was better?

were huge ships more commonly used as support or assault vessels? and how well did the gozanti act as an assault vessel (since its basic stats where pretty much just that of a large decimator) and how well did a raider act as a support?

was it worth putting a lot of points into one suped up raider, or were either one cost effective to just put out with minimal upgrades?

finally this may be a dumb question, but how infulntial was the gozanti's ability to dock ships? whats the actual strategy behind that?

Again, i know huge ships have changed a bit, but as someone experienced in the game, but New to epic, what advice can you give?

Non-Imperial player perspective. I mean, as you've said, everything is new again. We simply do not have the data to give us any clues as to the efficacy of Huge ships in 2.0. But yeah, as someone who faced off against Imperial Huge ships in 1.0 with some frequency, the Raider *used* to be devastating. I expect it will remain so. The Gozanti was much more subtle, less obviously effective. Not bad, just not the "Big Bad." As a carrier, the Gozanti was interesting, but seemed rarely to be pivotal in any given game I played; whereas the Raider could easily swing an entire game all by itself. I think I faced a Gozanti maybe twice, Raider something like five times. One of the Gozantis didn't have any attached TIEs; it was simply a very beefy attack/support ship, and not extraordinarily effective. But, you know. It was a *lot* cheaper, allowing much wider list building options. Heh, I feel like I'm not helping much. tl;dr: as a non-Imperial and based on 1.0 alone, I was much more afraid of the Raider than the Gozanti.

The gozanti has the same amount of health as a decimater. So id get the raider.

Depends you could go with the gozanti, have it fly in, THEN launch the 4 fighters it carries...

I don’t know where you are but the 1.0 Raider is going cheap on Amazon in both US and Canada. Then get the conversion kit when it comes out.

Bang for your buck? I'd go for the Raider. It's tougher than the Gozanti AND one of the titles allows it to dock two starfighters, so you're getting half the play mechanics of the G right there.

In 1.0, the huge ships were intimidating to look at, but that's about it. They went down fast and, at least in the case of the CR-90, if they destroyed the back half of the ship, the front half couldn't generate enough power to remain a threat for much longer and then the whole ship sank.

Besides, the Raider is the closest you'll get to fielding a Star Destroyer in X-Wing... unless you want to dress up your car as an ISD and roll it into the play area...

I never had anyone to play epic against in 1.0 so used to just do all-day massive games against myself when my wife was away. Used to run the Raider and the Gozanti together, along with far more other ships than was really sensible. Always found the Gozanti more fun, but the 2nd Edition ships seem radically different and you do now get the docking mechanics on the Raider too.

My advice would probably be to try and get both second-hand and a conversion kit - at least with the prices I've been seeing in the UK lately, it wouldn't be much different from a new Raider.

Where have you been looking because I cannot seem to find that anywhere near cost effective in the UK! Then again maybe I'm looking in all the wrong places!

The UK & Ireland sell and swap group on Facebook. Not sure if I can link to it, but it's easy to find. I recently picked up a second Raider for £40 posted and a CR-90 for £34 including postage and foam. Not seen a Gozanti on there lately but there was a new one in Norwich for £40 the other week so it seems like a second-hand Raider and Gozanti for £65-75 ought to be possible.

OI.

Well, let's just get this out of the way:

You're welcome, @Marinealver .

I personally like the Gozanti, because being able to protect four interceptors and drop them on the enemy is pretty great.

Gozonti I find is more utility and Raider is for direct assault. One combo I looking forward to is using the Gozanti with the lock title they used on stream (can't remember off the top of my headl and Targeting Battery to launch 4 Gunboats with FCS and Advanced Slam with Torps. Double Modded 4 torp alpha strike any one? With the Gozanti protecting them the can't get focused down immediately.

Edit: The more I think about it 2 with Ion Torps, 2 with Plasma, and all 4 will carry Adv. Protons. Turn 1 cripple shields and energy then turn 2 will be a 4 Adv. Proton Alpha.

I liked doing this too, but the main way they were used in 1st ed was to protect and deliver a powerful alpha-strike of 4 Tie Bombers. Competitively, the Gozanti was far better than the Raider. A Raider did a lot more direct damage, but also melted very fast and wasn't worth its points.

Most of my huge ships cost me £25 for the bigger ones and £20 for the smaller ones, including postage. That was a while ago, but they're still around.

If you're going to buy a new one, I'd buy the Raider, simply because it comes out first. However, in First Edition I had more fun with the Gozanti launching TIE interceptors, as @Wintercross said. Also, the titles for the Gozanti were more fun than the Raider's titles, but from what we've seen of the Raider and CR90, titles will be much more interesting this time around.

Gozanti in first edition was the superior ship due to its flexibility and cheap cost. The ability to drop full health ships in your enemies face was devastating. The Raider was too expensive for its capabilities. The only way I would consider it was by prior agreement with my opponent that they were taking a CR90, otherwise it’d just get swarmed by fighters. But this is the past and I think it is pretty irrelevant advice 😂 . There are so many changes to huge ships and epic sized battles it hard to predict how it’ll pan out. Most things in second edition are playable these days and they can always adjust point values. If you have no huge ships I’d go for the Raider as it’s out first.

That would be a pretty terrifying drop, especially since now you can drop from the sides.

It's kind of nice they removed the TIE only restrictions from the docking clamps

Also horrendously expensive just did a list for the 4 double torp gun boats come in at 202 (2 in, 2 plasma). Might just do 2 with Proton and Adv. Proton. Will atleast get some escorts in then.

Also worth noting, deploying fighters happens in the System phase now, instead of in the activation phase after all other ships had moved as was the case in First Edition. This brings the power level of the Gozanti down a smidge, giving the Raider better reason to see table time.

I'm so exited for the Raider preview so we can get a look at those titles!
