Painting and Glue question

By R3dReVenge, in Painting

A few questions for the wise masters in the paint forums.

I don't want to base my legion models and prefer to leave the faction-color bases for them. My problem is that I glue the model to the base, prime them, and then paint them. As a result, my base gets primed and changed from the original color.

1) What do you glue your model to when painting? Looking for other ideas.

2) If you glue your model to a different object while painting, what glue do you use? Currently, I use super glue to hold the entire model together and to it's base, but I'm worried that if I glue the model onto a different base, it will be challenging to remove it.

Thanks for the help!

I glue to the base and prime/paint from there. I have removed minis from bases before, using the freezer method, and it mostly works, you just gotta be careful.

Or use poster putty (available at many grocery stores in the 'school/office supplies' section or at any craft store) to temporarily stick models to a sheet of cardboard or what have you.

I just use a tiny bit of superglue gel on each foot. Then it's just good enough to keep it on the base for painting, and easy enough to pop them off the base.

I appreciate the advice!

A good trick is to drill a small hole in the heel of one foot, insert a piece of paper clip, trim it to the desire length, then stick it to a wine cork for painting.

Then when done, drill a matching hole in the base, glue down.

Or just repaint the bases in a matching shade?

Drill holes in the feet (or whatever touches the base). Then glue pins in there (like clipped paper clips or something). Then stick those in a wine cork. No glue needed. When you finish painting drill matching holes in your base and glue in the pins.

I really like this idea. What do you use to drill into the mini?

I have a citadel hand drill that has drill bits from 0.1 mm to 4 mm. You can find others if you look around, the citadel one is quite pricey for what it does.

I'm in the same boat as you because I like the faction colors and don't want to base my minis for any specific galactic environment. I simply use a tiny bit of hot glue from a cheap glue gun to affix them to a paint-can stir-stick (they're about a foot long). Any long, flat piece of wood would do. Fits a squad of 7 quite nicely with some space in between. I prime and paint them all while they're on the stick, then just pluck them off and superglue them to their bases when I'm done. The hot glue comes off clean and easily after it cools.
