Lists to Learn With

By Asaverino1019, in X-Wing

Later today I will be introducing someone new to the wonderful world of X-wing. I want to start him off simple so I've been trying to come up with lists that have some straightforward abilities (i.e. Wedge, Mauler, Scum Fenn) without being overly complicated . Does anyone have list ideas that would be good for beginners, without being a whole bunch of non-upgraded generics?

If they like empire I like tie advanced x1. It has okay dial is kind tanky and it has a linked action. Also it has a clear strategy.

Lambda -class T-4a Shuttle - •Colonel Jendon - 46
•Colonel Jendon - Darth Vader’s Shuttle Pilot (46)

TIE Advanced x1 - •Maarek Stele - 49
•Maarek Stele - Servant of the Empire (46)
Marksmanship (1)
Fire-Control System (2)

TIE/sk Striker - •“Duchess” - 56
•“Duchess” - Urbane Ace (42)
•Lone Wolf (5)
•Fifth Brother (9)

TIE Advanced x1 - •Ved Foslo - 49
•Ved Foslo - Ambitious Engineer (45)
Predator (2)
Fire-Control System (2)

Total: 200/200

This is a relatively easy list to learn, and what’s more is it’s very forgiving of the initial instinct to joust.

Feel free to drop crack shot to make it simpler

(62) Luke Skywalker [T-65 X-wing]
(0) Servomotor S-foils
(1) Instinctive Aim
(13) Proton Torpedoes
Points: 76

(55) Wedge Antilles [T-65 X-wing]
(0) Servomotor S-foils
(1) Crack Shot
(13) Proton Torpedoes
Points: 69

(41) Norra Wexley [BTL-A4 Y-wing]
(8) Veteran Turret Gunner
(5) Ion Cannon Turret
Points: 54

Total points: 199

Yeah that rebel list is simple to use and its hyperspace legal. I like that it has a turret too.

The list I posted is not hyperspace legal and would be more expensive for someone purchase.

Do you know if they have a preference for a specific faction?

Luke Skywalker — T-65 X-Wing 62
Servomotor S-Foils 0
Ship Total: 62
Half Points: 31 Threshold: 3
Wedge Antilles — T-65 X-Wing 55
Servomotor S-Foils 0
Ship Total: 55
Half Points: 28 Threshold: 3
Blue Squadron Pilot — A/SF-01 B-Wing 41
Ship Total: 41
Half Points: 21 Threshold: 4
Blue Squadron Pilot — A/SF-01 B-Wing 41
Ship Total: 41
Half Points: 21 Threshold: 4

Tell them to run the 2 B-Wings in a pair (encourage 1 forwards and banks early on) with Wedge and Luke both split up and approaching from their own angles.

I build tutorial lists for that reason. I tend to build two for each faction, and set it up like so:

Tutorial 1– 100pts, nothing but generics with very little in the way of upgrades. For example, Rebels : Blue Squadron X-Wing with a shield upgrade, a Pheonix A-Wing, and a Bandit Z-95. Empire is an Alpha Interceptor, Obsidian Tie Fighter, and Tempest Tie X1.

Tutorial 2– 100pts, this where I throw on card upgrades, and give them a (preferably known) named character. I also try to keep this to just two smal ships. For example, Empire: a Scimitar Tie Bomber with Protons and Munition Failsafe, Nightbeast, and Seyn Marana with Marksmanship. Or Resistance : Wexley with Prime Thrusters, Foils, and Heoric, and Tallie with Heroic.

Again, these lists are not meant to be competitive, and more meant to get a newcomer’s feet wet with two separate smallish games that won’t overload them. The third time they play is where I show them how to go about building a list, and try to emphasize keeping things lighter on the upgrades. And it’s about that time I push them towards the “Big **** Heroes” they likely want to play... Like Han in the Falcon, Vader, Poe Dameron, Rey, Boba Fett, Anakin, etc...

The third game is also where I’ll tend to subtly push the game towards a more cinematic matchup. Such as pulling out a Black Sun themed list to play against them if they take Lando and Dash. Or pull out a Red Squadron themed list (Garven, Wedge, Jek) if they opt to go with Vader and a bunch of Ties.

That was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.
