Does Arvel trigger Heff if he bumps with a boost?

By TasteTheRainbow, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Arvel

“...resolve it as though you were partially executing a maneuver instead”

Heff Tober

”After an enemy ship executes a maneuver, if it is at range 0....”

I would say no. Arvel isn't executing a maneuver, he's performing a boost action which sorta-doesn't-exactly-fail in an unusual way.

that's a no. Arvel reads "resolve it as though you were partially executing a maneuver instead.". this is a replacement effect that resolves instead of the default way failing a boost action resolves. the card reads that you do it as though you were partially executing a maneuver, not that you resolve it as partially executing a maneuver. Arvel failing a boost because of overlap with another ship isn't even failing an action, since it's a replacement effect. it's not executing a maneuver either, it's performing a boost action and resolving it as though you were executing a maneuver, but without executing a maneuver.

Technically, "partially executing a maneuver" says nothing about a maneuver or that i can only be done as a maneuver. Its just a list of steps.

partially execute that maneuver by performing the following steps:

1. Move the ship backward along the template until it is no longer on top of
any other ships. While doing so, adjust the position of the ship so that the
hashmarks in the middle of both sets of guides remains centered over the
line down the middle of the template.

2. Once the ship is no longer on top of any other ship, place it so that it is
touching the last ship it backed over. This may result in the ship returning
to its starting position.

3. The ship skips its Perform Action step.

wait what? are you saying that paritally executing a maneuver is not executing a maneuver?

page 14, bottom left, under Overlap:

• Even if a ship partially executes a maneuver, it is still treated as having executed a maneuver of the indicated speed, bearing, and difficulty.

page 18, under Speed:

• Even if a ship partially executes a maneuver, it is still treated as having executed a maneuver of the indicated speed.

um.. no. I'm saying that following the steps for partially executing a maneuver isn't exclusive to just executing maneuvers (which is another set it steps found on page 13). That is is a list of steps to follow when game mechanics or abilities tell you to follow them.
