Two gaming aids I think FF should put out for 40K

By dustin5, in Dark Heresy

If the good folks at Fantasy Flight are listening (or reading ;) ) I have a request for you to put out two gaming aids for your Warhammer 40K games:

1.) I would love to see some awesome Q-Workshop percentile dice! Also, if you do have them make them, please have them readable like the Arkham Horror dice (those are great dice).

2.) Please make some cardboard stand ups for all of your 40K games like the ones you have for Warhammer Fantasy 3rd Ed. Those are really nice. We are trying to collect GW miniatures and as most people know, they are difficult to work with. Most likely, it is a problem for you to put out miniatures for these games, so that is why I am mentioning the nice cardboard stand ups.

Obviously Warhammer 40K is a popular rpg and I really think it would be worth your time to put these two kinds of gaming aids out (especially the cardboard cutouts).

Thanks and cheers!

Man, I was hoping others would agree with me..... instead I look like a whiner gui%C3%B1o.gif

The dice I suppose would be awesome. I have probably close to 20 sets of dice, and am not opposed to buying more. As to the stand-ups... Well, that might not work. There's already several lines of minis; not the least which being the actual WH40K minis, which do the job nicely. GW might have clauses in the license which may not allow FFG to do something like that with the DH/RT/DW lines. I don't know that though, so it's wild conjecture and rampant speculation on my part. gran_risa.gif

Post-Script: No, not a whiner, Dustin. Just that you mentioned something that most of the other Forumites didn't think required response.

I was wanting to see how many might agree with me in hopes to get some shiny cardboard stand ups. You never know, if enough people say yes, FF might consider it worth it to do just that. I bet Q-workshop got a lot of requests for those 6 siders to use for Arkam Horror for FF to come out with those packs.

I had mention this in another subject about the miniatures. The problem with GW's Miniatures is that they are for their War games and not for the rpgs (which are more specific in nature). Take for example, I did not see any tech priests on GW's page (the closest was "Space Wolves Iron Priest"). How about a Rouge Trader, Scum, Assassin (they sort of have ones, but $30 each? ****), etc.

And then their are the various monsters and NPCs that are specific to these rpgs.

The main thing is the price. I am not sure about the rest of you guys, but we don't mind getting a fancy miniature for our main characters, but since most of the GW miniatures that do fit for Dark Heresy and Rouge Trader are the pricey special ones (the one's I could find anyway), that makes me want to use tokens in place of monsters and NPS (or use other minis from other games). You know what I mean? It would be different if most of the bad guys were space orks, ect., but mutants or cultists are not really on the GW site.

I know we could go without them (and we will have to), but like I said, those cardboard stand ups from the 3rd Ed. Warhammer are a great solution to this problem. They are not as fancy as painted miniatures, but they are not as cheap as the print & cut out ones either. I actually like the little token cut outs that came with the D&D starter kit, but the stand ups seem to fit Fantasy Flight's kind of quality better. Since they were able to do this for WH 3rd Ed, I am sure they could do this for 40K.

Just a thought (a very HOPEFUL thought gui%C3%B1o.gif )

There are actually two techpriest Enginseer minis available; as they can be fielded with Imperial Guard. They're mostly identical in the body, but some bits look to be different. There's also the Chronoscope line by REAPER. I particularly like using their NOVA Corp minis for enforcer kill-teams. Heresy Miniatures is also a fun place to look, and has an interesting selection of stock.

But, yes, for the money conscious, something along the cardboard stand up line of things would not be a terrible idea.

no offence but im not a fan of the stand up idea...if DH went the way WFRP3 went id quit playing im just not a fan of the new system at all its like DND 4th compared to DND 3.5 to me...

Thanks for those links! I typed in "Tech Priest" and I bet that is why I did not catch that. The way their web site is set up, I keep missing stuff, even after I thought I had looked through the whole thing.

We have a few of the Chronoscopes and I really like that price.

Oh no, I am not talking about changing the rules. Just if they could make stand ups like those for Dark Heresy for aid with describing combat (which is simply what 3rd Ed. uses them for... I believe you can not use them for that game and it would be fine).

I am horrible at discribing combat and were people are during combat. Our other GM likes to use miniatures and I have been trying to help him out in finding ones for this (and eventually Rouge Trader and Deathwatch).

Oh, and also, did you guys see that FF is putting out more dice ?

I have an artist friend who makes "standees" for sci-fi and fantasy RPGs. They are not 40k speciffic (for legal reasons) but are still nice quality for cardstock products. The line currently favours manly-sorts with leather and guns, cyborgs, kill-bots, zombies and of course "hot chicks". Because of the forum rules I can't post a link here, but if it appeals to you feel free to look up Dakkar Studios online. Last I checked they were also selling on DrivethroughRPG.

For actual GW cultists it is actually not that hard now. Buy some boxes of plastic IG (Catachan are best for this). GW sells a "mutations" sprue via their "bitz" catalogue for about $6.60 US that can be used to make some baddies in desperate need of purging! There are also some old pewter chaos cultists minis in their catalogue, but I think they are discontinued at this point. I have also seen some pretty cool conversions using the Warhammer Fantasy plastic Flagelants set as a base.

Necromunda minis are AWESOME for certain DH types. Van Saar, Orlock, Escher, Delaque are all good hiver/scum types. Goliaths - ferral worlder. Redemptionists- duh. Arbitrators- again, duh. Scavies, Ratkin make for good muties and other oddities. Plenty more there too!

Of note: GW also has "Deathwatch Conversion Packs" available via "bitz". Ten sets of special Deathwatch bolters, shoulder pads and so on to use on the modular plastic Space Marine models. They run around $25 US for 10 complete sets, which is CHEAP by GW mail order standards.

With the exception of Reaper, just about all of the good mineature lines are in the same (or higher!) price range as GW these days, so not much good news on that front. At least the quality is up!

I actually bought the set of Arbites (including a cyber-mastiff!) and I'm using the trench coat Arbite for my character

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1060105&prodId=prod1120127

(As an aside...the spue contains all sorts of good weapons to trick out your Arbites, including a plasma pistol, bolt pistol, shotguns, shock mauls and bolters)

In the Witchhunter Army you can find sages and clerics, and assassins; obviously, the Imperial Guard army is the place to look for your IG character

(too bad it costs SO MUCH to get this good stuff)

I very much agree with Brother P regarding cost-savings measures though

Man, I feel like I am a retard when it comes to looking on GW's web site. I need to spend some more time trying to navigate through it.

Thank you guys for those tips and links to those minis. I am going pass this on to our Dark Heresy GM, although they will come in handy for me too because he is trying to push me into running Rouge Trader.

Cheers!

Look at Privateer Press Iron Kingdoms and War Machine. There are a few miniatures that would cover the very-stereotyped Rogue Trader look, such as :

http://privateerpress.com/warmachine/gallery/mercenaries/warcasters/captain-bartolo-montador

PS: When I spoke to the FFG guys at GenCon last year they specifically stated that they were not allowed to do miniatures per the GW license. I am not sure how card board standies works in the license, but my guess is that we won't see anything that might infringe on GW's ability to sell expensive miniatures (that are going up in price yet again!)

Regarding navigation through the GW site: Don't worry about it. When I pulled that link for the Arbites group, I had initially entered the keyword: Arbites", which pulled up the Inquisition figure only. Not good for a mini. Had I put in the keyword "Arbite" (without the plural "s" at the end) I would've gotten the group that I linked. Sad fact is, you have to know beforehand which army in which your figure is found, otherwise you could spend a millenium searching (which explains why Warhammer is set in the 41st millenium. Sort of...) I happen to play the Witch hunter Army (Sisters of Battle, some Inquisitors, Inducted Imperial Guard), so I'm intimately familiar with the playable figures for that army.

Also, it helps to have the GDP of a small nation when purchasing at their site...

I was just watching the video that they put out for Horus Heresy and they have exactly what I was talking about in that board game: the same kind of cardboard stand ups that 3rd Ed uses (but 40K stuff on them).

See FF, you are already there! Just put out ones for the rpgs now! ;)

Of course there were also little plastic mins too.... I actually like those better.

There's a couple of bits on Forgeworld's site which are good for DH or RT characters.

The titan crew on foot looks a lot like a ship's officer and crew:

www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Titans/TITAN-CREW-ON-FOOT.html

There's also another tech-priest they do:

www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Titans/TITAN-TECH-PRIEST.html

On GW's site take a look in the daemon hunters and Witch hunters sections for lots of suitable inquisitorial acolytes etc. Also the imperial guard section has lots of military types. the necromunda section (in the specialist games tab) is good for less formal gangers, hive scum etc, as well as the arbitrators mentioned previously.

One bit of caution though, the Inquisitor models in the specialist games section are in a different scale from everything else - they are 54mm, whereas most of the other ranges are 28mm, and are more aimed at collectors, which is a shame as lots of them are obviously very appropriate to DH. I suspect it was these you were looking at when you were talking about $30 per model.

I began making my own tokens via PrintScreen + Photoshop and the Deathwatch Enhanced Edition game by http://rodeogames.co.uk...

SEE HERE for transparent PNG

I am gonna make more of these for my online gaming!

Morbid

I could go for some WH40KRP -specific dice- maybe with the '0' replaced with a symbol (Inquisitorial rosette for Dark Heresy , the Chaos symbol for Black Crusade , an Aquilla for Only War , the Deathwatch shoulder-pad symbol for Deathwatch... not sure what you would use for Rogue Trader , though).

Cardboard standees aren't a bad idea, either. Although I usually use minis, there are some encounters where I don't have nearly enough of a particular type, so I'll resort to hand-drawn standees to fill the gap. I use the old plastic bases from the original Battletech game to make them stand up.

For actual GW cultists it is actually not that hard now. Buy some boxes of plastic IG (Catachan are best for this). GW sells a "mutations" sprue via their "bitz" catalogue for about $6.60 US that can be used to make some baddies in desperate need of purging! I have also seen some pretty cool conversions using the Warhammer Fantasy plastic Flagelants set as a base.

Yeah, don't overlook GW 's fantasy line when looking for plastic components that can be converted for DH . Empire Flagellants (with simple weapon swaps) are perfect for cultists, Crypt Ghouls (painted a variety of colors) make good mutant hordes (plus they come with extra heads which can be added to the Flagellants [just roll out a bead of Green Stuff to serve as a neck] to make extra-crazy cannibal cultists!), Brettonian Men-At-Arms can form the base for lots of Imperial archetypes, etc.

Here's an example of some of my customized figures, made mainly from GW plastic bitz.

I was wanting to see how many might agree with me in hopes to get some shiny cardboard stand ups. You never know, if enough people say yes, FF might consider it worth it to do just that

Actually, if they know a little about how to make money and run a business, no, they won't even consider it. They will first consider an idea and then check up if people could be interested, not the other way around.

Print out my top down TOKEN - mount it to something TOP-DOWN like a 1inch x 1inch peg or wood or something and VIOLA you have a top-down mini!
