Gadgets and Gear discussion

By Varlie, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Continuing a conversation from the Predictions thread...

All gear, no species or specialties. There's a two page spread that explains a few talents that (i guess) aren't in all the core books but may be referenced by some of the gear listed.
Barrage, Blooded, Brace, Jury Rigged, etc

It includes the Unwieldy weapon quality and the Lightsaber(Brawn) skill which are probably previously only FAD entries.

The rest of the book is broken down into weapon/armor/gear type

Blasters
Exotic Weapons
Brawl Weapons
Melee Weapons (lightsabers are included in this chapter)
Explosives and Ordinance
Armor
Attachments
Equipment

All the equipment details are within the description blurb so no need to look at the "Brawl weapons chart" to check damage, crit, costs. All are included on the description.

Overall, nice look to the book. Have not had time to go through and see what are all new items versus reprinted but if you have a question, I'll be glad to post when I have time

Yea, I'd love to hear anything standout or interesting from the book, or if it just in general has lost of stuff that could effectively let a group use it and one of the core books for most purchases. For specific questions: Is the book focused mostly on OT era stuff or did they reprint some of the Clone Wars book stuff in there? Are there any unique armor sets like a specific Stormtrooper armor set, or Darth Vader set for those who might want to retheme the suit to some other Sith lord? Is the book mostly focused on Hero equipment and weapons and if so are there any standouts like Lando's Closet.

Probably questions better for a thread dedicated to the book than us all further commandeering the prophet’s thread. 😁

From what I have seen, none of the new items that showed up in the Clone Wars books are reprinted in Gadgets and Gears. Most likely, GG was fully designed before everything in the CW books were finalized. There are unique armor but not like different Stormtrooper armor, only the legendary character stuff like Boba Fett's armor, Darth Vader's armor. The book collects 54 different armors/clothing/shields. Again, I don't have all the books so there are a lot of new items (for me) that could be listed elsewhere. I have not taken the time to go through the list of equipment in Oggdude's program or the Master List to compare.

Each of the unique items, provides a special ability (if used by the legendary character); Boba Fett's Armor has Heartless Silence: Once per session, as an OOT Incidental may spend a Destiny Point to cause a social check targeting him to fail.
Some of those are pretty cool and it's interesting to see something like Genesys's special ability options but tying it to equipment.

Are there any stand out items or bits of equipment in the book? Or any abilities on the unique gear that seem real fun and unique like Lando's closet?

There are several weapons that I thought would be great to use against my players but I would't want them getting their hands on.

Most of the unique gear have abilities that wouldn't work even if players got a hold of the item. Han's blaster: Boring Conversation Anyway - allows Han to immediately draw the blaster and make a combat check targeting the target of a failed Deception check (costs 2 Advantage). So unless you are running a game based on the OT characters and each player is playing one of them, the abilities are mainly fluff.

The exotic weapons chapter covers Bowcaster Quarrels which are pretty cool and provide alternate ammo options for the weapon.

Two different "wardrobes"
Lando's Armoire and Leia's Diplomatic Wardrobe - both allow you to choose clothing that adds bonuses to random checks.

My contributor copy should arrive in a couple of hours, according to UPS. Glad both wardobe items made final cut, those were a lot of fun (and a ton of research) to write. After The Force Awakens, I knew I needed to add explosive quarrels at a minimum to the bowcaster somehow, so having the bandolier provide some alternate ammunition loads felt appropriate. Glad they're being well received thus far!

I'd also note that for weapons at least, I re-wrote pretty much every single weapon entry, fluff wise, for this job. This was super necessary to accomplish two things. First, its how we have that super clean 4 weapons to a page layout you see on every spread. And Second, I had to make sure each of those 80 blasters (or however many it was) sounded unique and interesting with its own identity. So a lot of new lore got created around a lot of the weapons, or new elements of existing lore got explored. So if you have a favorite, you might want to get this book just to see what new role playing elements might have been added to your arsenal.

Hopefully FFG will do something similar to G&G for vehicles. I'll definitely be buying that one if they do.

Odds are strong that this is coming.

Why do you say this? It's pretty simple to say to my player who plays a gunslinging pilot from Corellia who isn't Han Solo that he has made a name for himself in the galaxy for being a 'shoot first' kind of guy and giving him Han's blaster and calling it something different with the same mechanical benefit.

As the GM you can give your players whatever you want. But as I understand it the items in the book are specifically in the hands of so and so this item gains the whatever property.

Got my copy tonight. I found that not every piece of kit made it into the book. My character uses paired Quicktrigger pistols and the N-57 Armor, neither of which are in the book. Not a critical oversight as there's enough goodies in the book to keep PCs happy.

EDIT: Found the entry for the Quicktrigger pistols. However the entry is missing the special rule for reducing the difficulty of repairing or modding the weapon by 1.

Is there anything related to lightsabers there at all?

Yeah it reprints pretty much all the various hilts and a ton of crystals and hilt mods. Good one-stop shopping for lightsabers and other energy melee weapons

I was really hoping for/expecting some comprehensive equipment tables. A bit disappointed that they aren't there.

Are there a lot of new pictures of weapons?

I think that was my one disappointment in the book. There were such good reworking on equipment throughout as you mentioned earlier to fit into the format but things that have had a lot of conversations in the forums like the Dantari Crystal didn't get any rework or clarification about when it can activate. (Very minor disappointment, I'll admit)

There are plenty of pictures, schematic style. Not every weapon or gear has one but they are there. Some 2-page spreads only have 1 image due to description text others have upwards of 5 (of 8 weapons) having an image

His often is that the case? Put another way, what percentage of gear would you say is illustrated?

Oh, I'm not even going to guess on that. Considering none of the attachment entries have illustrations, you then have to look at just weapon, armor, and gear entries. There are a lot of illustrations but there are a lot of entries without. Overall, I'm pleased with the whole design and as always, there are plenty of full color imagery splashed throughout the book in addition the illustrations.

Hmm, is there anything new, other than the unique items?

Plenty of new stuff for me. As i posted earlier, I don't have all the books and I'm not going page by page to look it up on L Master List or Oggdude's.

There may be a non-unique item in there that's not printed elsewhere but they don't mark them as such

My FLGS just let me know that my copy is in, so I'll be picking that up this afternoon.

As I've got all the books and a pretty good memory of what's been published so far, I'll take a look through to see if I can answer The Jack's question, unless of course somebody else beats me to the punch.

Just picked my copy up at the lgs.

In my copy I think there is a mistake on the HOB Heavy Repeating Blaster stats. Says it has the same stats as a normal heavy blaster rifle. Which is much weaker than the standard heavy repeating blaster.

@Octavian84 You seem to be right.

What is in the book for Medical and Mechanics skills based equipment?

So any idea if we will get Sourcebooks for KotOR and the First Order era?
