RAC against the world

By missileaway, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Had to share possibly the most insane game I've been involved in.

I ran RAC with Vader, Lone Wolf and Dauntless title, Soontir with Predator, Duchess with Crackshot.

My opponent, a talented scum player who has been playing for years, ran Fenn Rau with Fearless, Old Teroch with Fearless, and Guri with Crackshot.

At 195, he outbid me by two points and gave me initiative.

A bit of backstory. A month prior I ran RAC against him with Rexler as the wingman while he flew a CIS list he was testing. I beat him 200-0. Last week I played Resistance against another player rolling triple fangs, and lost 200-30. We were both facing lists from our nightmares.

I spread out my list, pushing Soontir up the far left board edge with a five straight, slow rolling duchess up the middle, and pushing RAC four straight up the right board edge.

One of these three moves was a terrible mistake.

He went all in on Soontir. I had been way to aggressive and the only move the Imperial ace could make was turn in and pray to take as few shots as possible.

First round of fire Soontir takes hit crit -- panicked pilot! With three stress, Soontir is never taking actions ever again. In exchange he managed one shield off Guri.

Soontir proceeds to run, dragging his three opponents after him. This does at least pull Old T straight in front of Duchess. Old T takes her focus token. Duchess shoots, lands hit, hit, crit. Crackshots one evade, while Concordia Faceoff cancels one. Crit is direct hit, leaving Old T at one health. Fenn and Guri dispatch the fleeing Soontir. Old T returns fire on duchess -- four hits, Duchess blanks and is gone.

All alone at the top of the board, it's now RAC against the world. I can either bank in and spend the next 10 minutes having the Deci ripped to shreds, or I can go hyper aggressive and see if I can at least make a mess of things. I go aggressive and throw the Deci four forward.

Thinking I was going to slow roll and that he could get Old T into my front arc and take my reinforce away, he banks in Old T...right into the side of RAC. His other two ships roll in. Know what makes Old T sad? Being range 0 and in arc of Vader with no tokens. Vader chokes the life out of the Fang. Two on one. Fenn is range 1 of the deci, and spends his focus to get three hits. Two of which take off shields. RAC returns fire on Fenn, using RAc's ability and lone wolf to send in hit-hit-crit. Fenn rolls all blanks and focuses. He eats all three shots and it's his turn to get panicked pilot.

I begin turning the decimator around a debris cloud. His Fenn punches it in a desperate bid to get of vader range. He succeeds, making range 3 by maybe a millimeter. Fenn lives -- for now. Instead I take off one of Guri's tokens. I open up on Fenn and he goes down. One on one. Guri blanks out on a range one shot.

We spend the next two turns disengaging while I bring the deci around the debris and he dances out of arc.

We wind up an inch away from each other head-to-head. Vader again takes a token and I lash Guri, getting her to one health. The return fire brings the Deci down to three health and a weapons disabled crit.

I have three options -- hard turn right, or hard turn left to try and keep Guri in arc, or just slam into the android and hope my opponent picked the wrong maneuver. I ram the Starviper and rotate with the title and cross my fingers. He dialed in a two bank and clears by a millimeter. Guri rolls out of arc and we go back to dials.

I soft bank, clear stress and rotate. He turns Guri in and gets his focus and calculate. I save Vader for the force mod. I roll hit crit blank. Lone wolf reroll into an eyeball, force for three hits. He rolls evade, focus, blank. Guri takes the crit and dies. Simultaneous fire! Guri shoots back, needing three paint to get the Deci. He rolls hit-hit-focus-focus. That works. Spends the focus and the deci dies.

All of this happened in 50 minutes.

Final salvo! 9 dice each. I roll first. Five hits. Above average is good. He rolls next. Seven hits on nine dice! He rolled his dice three more times to try and even get close to that and rolled a max of three hits. He's never allowed to complain about his dice ever again.

RAC proved to a surprisingly effective endgame ship. That was not my original plan whatsoever, but with Lone Wolf permanently on because his hapless squad mates bit the dust and his pilot ability, he was double modding almost every shot, and limiting the damage with reinforce. A reinforced decimator with double mods, reinforce, and Vader can be very hard to kill.

In any event, even though I came up just short in my upset bid, this one goes down as one of my favorite matches.
