Like I said earlier, the power of R2 comes from the vehicle that he repairs. Him gaining the VP is going to be very challenging and rarely happen against a competent opponent.

R2 doesn't seem like he fits in your list. How is he going to keep up with the BARC speeders to repair them? It usually takes 1-2 turns for your opponent to kill them and their compulsory movement will separate them from R2. So to me, it seems like you are wasting 35 points for a chance of a VP.

What other things does R2 do? He repairs vehicles and has a low chance to score a VP. Not worth 35 points unless the vehicle he repairs is high cost.

You're ignoring that he can also get VP the old fashioned way. Shove a moisture vap behind a building out of LoS of your opponent, and R2 can go repair/sabotage without costing you an attack. Put a supply box near your deployment for him to grab and then go hide, without costing you a unit that can shoot range 1-3 at your opponent's unit(s) that are holding containers. Let him babysit one of the Transmissions/terrain pieces that is further from your opponent's deployed units, again, out of line of sight/in the safest place, without worrying about losing a combat effective unit.

He’s a cheap objective grabber, which allows the rest of your army to focus on other things (like shooting with Z6s). Repair is not the only thing he brings to the table. He’s not in that list to repair BARCs (but if he does it’s a nice bonus). He also hands out aim or dodge tokens when you really need it. Just give it to an activated unit so the suppression doesn’t matter.

Well, like I said it’s very similar to Bounty. The threat alone is quite strong and not something they can ignore. If the droids march along with the rest of the army, what’s your opponent going to do? Ignore them and let you get a point? Or divert shots away from the clones? You have to give them bad choices.

I just have trouble seeing 35 points being a good choice for a unit that is a dedicated objective grabber. Maybe I'm wrong, but I lean toward spending 17 more points and bring an extra squad of Phase 1s.

R2 does not hand out aims or dodges. You need C3PO to do that and at that point you cost the same as a squad of Phase 1s. Which really is a point sink.

Again, you can only take 6 of them. In my example list there is no option to bring another clone unit. And I keep referring to them as “the droids” to be clear that I’m referring to R2+3PO.

And cheap (35 or 50 points) is precisely what you want in a dedicated objective grabber. Cut all the fat if it’s doing nothing but holding down a supply box or vaporator. Maybe don't even take 3PO if that’s the strategy.

edit: and actually even in a list without max Corps, I think I would take both droids over a naked Phase I unit.

Not sure about this one. They might be interesting to play, but don't want to drop $40 on a 2 mini unit (not interested in the terrain). I like the secret mission ability - couple with the right objective this could win the game.

Whilst being an operative opens up some good stuff with command cards, I'm gutted that we can't run luke, leia, han, and chewy with the droids - was looking forward to that. The most likely solution to this would be a han operative with chewy counterpart.
