Re-playable campaign made by whole Doom community

By Martouf, in Doom

I'm quite new to forum so I do not know if this would work.

My idea was to make many small scenario's with several exit points leading to other scenario's.

The whole Doom community could make 1 or more scenario's, creating a giant campaign.

When you invite your friends for Doom, you should be able to finish this campaign in 5 hours, but because of the many scenario's that run parallel, you could replay this campaign over and over.

Would this work?

Well, I'm working on an Advanced Campaign version of Doom, which is based on Descent's Advanced Campaign (i.e. play over many sessions, slow increase of power, multiple "levels" leading to a climactic final battle). In fact, just finished the layout of one of the sector levels (though haven't finished the card for it yet):

Will this be what you're looking for, small maps played over many sessions?

Martouf rolls dice (Willsave) to protect his topic from being captured. (ROLL 4+3 against DC 99) *FAILED*

Shnar has succesfully captured topic.

(joke)

Yes and no.

I was aware of your campaign but haven't read everything thoroughly (you have a lot of topics and replies)

Maybe you should have a facebook or a weblog for your campaign info.

I would like to read more about it, even help if I can. I saw you create card decks, board pieces, unique monsters.

Really cool, but I think the step is too high for me and many others. How do you make all these cards and pieces with factory quality?

+ I do not want to create a large campaign and compete with your campaign at all.

(but lets do that in a different thread and please link your image rather then show it)

My idea was:

To create scenario's with the whole community. Each scenario is small and has multiple exits. Many scenario's run parallel and intertwine, depending on the doors you take. We could make 100 small scenario's and there are only 5-10 scenario's you have to run through to finish it (so you finish in 1 day and have a winner)

Since for every progression there are like 10-20 optional area's, you could replay this campaign over and over.

Print out booklet with all scenario's, buy some chips and gogogo

I will go to more detail later, first I want to know if the community is large enough (and willing) to pull something like this together?

Sounds like you're looking for something more akin to Kevin's "Dungeon Delve" game idea rather than a full on Advanced Campaign. That could very well work in Doom as well as it does in Descent. I think user-submitted mini maps could be easily used for both of these projects (with designer's permission, of course.) It would be a good way to quickly build a library of "sector levels." Martouf could use the bare bones maps and mark a few exit points, Shnar could use the same maps to build up more of his sectors, both projects would advance that much more quickly. =)

As far printing out Shnar's campaign, well, it might not be so easy to get "factory quality" but if you get a sheaf of cardstock from your local office supplies store and a half-decent colour printer, you can still make darn good quality print outs by yourself. I bought a sheaf of 250 cardstock sheets several years ago and I have yet to use half of them, so while it may seem expensive, one sheaf should get you a long way. If that's too arts and crafts for you, you could investigate pricing for getting the components printed out at Kinko's or something. That would have to wait until we have a playable beta of the campaign, of course, so we know how much stuff there is to print. =)

I do not think we can exchange maps, since I will be using everything inside the box while Shnar is thinking outside the box.

I have already started creating scenario's and maybe I can show something later to encourage people to make them as well.

Nah, I might be creating a few custom tiles, but just about everything will be in-the-box stuff. I'm definitely not creating any new map tiles (and most of the maps will be base-game only, about 1/4 will be base+expansion). Course, I am adding rules for the Health Stations and Storage Lockers, so maybe not usable?

P.S. Wasn't trying to hijack the thread, just trying to see how similar the two ideas were :P

When I said boardpieces I didn't meant new tiles (sry I'm not English), but I meant tokens like storage lockers, elevators, trucks, soldiers.

Anyways, I do not think we have community for this idea so I make it myself :P

In a normal game, when marines enter a room, it don't matter how much you put there, in most cases everything is gone at the end of their turn, and damage from the invader comes mostly from spawns in combination with special actions during his turn.

I want to make small scenario's that need to be played like chess with all units visible on the board (that are not killed in 1 turn).

Marines dont get frontguard+killer instinct combo's to clear everything up (or be completely obliterated themselves)

One marine gets Lithe, another can shoot through obstacles and another is the big guy with scout and lean and mean and they have to find a route through small scenario's. Marines don't respawn, but the scenario restarts when they all die. The scenario is completed if just 1 marine reaches the end.

Its fairly simple. The map is laid like a training course, there is a so called masterplan in the scenario design, and the more the marines do not see that and deviate from this invisible path, the more the invader will punish them.

Though it's all designed on 3 marines, I think this game is best played quickly as a 1 v 1 with 1 playing the marines and the other the invaders.

I got 8 scenario's so far and stil having lots of inspiration.
