Any news on 2019-2020 Regionals (IE., "prime" championship) event scheduling?

By xanderf, in Star Wars: Armada

As above - any news on when these look like they'll be coming up? I understand the season runs from November 2019 to February 2020 - so we're getting into the window where we need to be booking flights and rooms and such if trying to hit multiple locations...

Red Castle in portland said they are likely in Feb

Yup, saw that one on the area FB page. Wife has a mind to visit the family back east some time in this upcoming season, though, so wondering particularly what scheduling on those states looked like...

There's nothing scheduled yet, but I do know for certain that Denver is getting one and so is Des Moines, IA.

As far as for Canada, the process was to apply - if you were accepted, you were then asked to provide 3 dates. The specific range of those dates for Canada was 15Nov to 25Feb.

There seemed about a week and a half from application to acceptance. But we’re still waiting on hearing which dates of our chosen three are it.

The good news for us is there seems to be more Primes than Regionals, so although notice may be shorter, opportunities may be greater.

As I understand it, that is the same process for the USA, and the date ranges noted sound about the same - so I'd assume they are.

I've heard about a few stores at this point. They were recently told of their selection and submitted dates.

Somehow i have the feeling that the next worlds will be really "manageable" and small 😁.

I guess the next one is again on the Adepticon at the end of March. It will be really close for most, when the Prime Championships are this close to the deadline and if there are only so few.
It might come down to top 8 from the Continentals, top 4 from the Grand and a handfull of Primes.

On a sidenote: I heard that there will be only 4 Prime Championships in Germany at all. This is a really low number, under the fact that the Prime is the main qualification for the Worlds.

That really stinks for Germany Tokra :(

I've got some small hope that US and Canada might be expanding slightly. I've heard of at least once new store stateside being awarded a Prime that has applied and failed in previous years.

Has anyone in the northeast heard rumors of a store that was selected? We were lucky last year and had a couple but with the short run up time and limited published information I'm thinking that our choices will be more limited this year.

I am hoping my FLGS got in they had regionals the first 2 years, but the last few years have been declined. I just find it odd as we have a game Night every week that gets 8+ people and when we host a tournament we normally get a least 12 people, I know some regionals last year that had fewer people than that show up and that includes people traveling to play there.

Denver didn't get a Regional last year, but the year before that we had 24 people. None of it made any sense.

I've seen complaints from a number of stores that HAD hosted it in years past that the deadline for application this year was too soon, and too poorly published, and so they missed it.

That may explain why new stores are getting it - if considerably fewer stores managed to get requests in than previous years...?

My store had no idea the deadline was approaching. I only knew about it because someone here (or maybe on Reddit) posted something from their Organized Play Facebook page. I believe FFG sent a single email to retailers and assumed that would be sufficient.

Well...****

As the events coordinator at a retail game store, I can offer a firsthand perspective:

I received my application via a clearly marked email on 7/3 and had until 7/15 to apply. I felt this was an adequate amount of time to complete the form, especially as you weren't committing to any dates at this stage of the application process.

I don't exactly have a horse in this race, but you have to admit - from receiving the application to deadline only 12 days, some of which includes the US 4th of July holidays and events? That really isn't very much time, no. I can easily see why some stores might have been caught a bit off-guard at how short the window was.

Sure, but its not as if a lot was asked, either... Effectively, the only real question asked was "Do you want to be considered to Host one?" - apart from the basic store details. It was pretty much a Yes/No answer, its not like you had to deep dive your player base to ask for possible dates to run...

Took me about 45 seconds to reply.

How exactly is 12 days a short time to reply? If you cant handle that then can you manage the subsequent organising correspondance?

I do know Midgard in Derry NH will not have a Prime tournament this year. They did apply but got a response that FFG wanted to spread things out. I will be hosting a tournament at Midgard on 10/19, I will announce it as soon as they get the event posted.

My guess would be BattleGrounds in Saugus MA may get it this year. They hosted a tournament the weekend after the SSD release and they stated that with all the Armada news about new expansions they are planning to host regular Armada Tournaments there. The one caveat is they would have had to put in their application before then so if this was a spur of the moment comment they may not have applied for the Prime Championship.

For me the one thing I am excited about Midgard not getting a Prime is that it means I will now be able to play.

Yeah. I used to play at Mayhem, and the guy who runs the group there has confirmed they're getting one.
