Hyperspace & “Pure Sabacc”

By polmoneys, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Looking for ideas with “PS” as it feels like a Fenn Rau-lite. Yesterday at the kitchen table had fun with Echo/”PS” (Predator, Fifth Brother, Afterburners)/Vader but my next tourney is hyperspace format.

I like having same init so Vermeil comes to mind. ‘The Plan’ is to send Vermeil & Fat Soontir head on to draw aggro away from “PS” who flanks/stays behind rocks for the first engagement.

“Pure Sabacc” (44)
Outmaneuver (6)
Fifth Brother (9)
Shield Upgrade (6)

Major Vermeil (49)
Predator (2)
Darth Vader (14)

Soontir Fel (53)
Predator (2)
Shield Upgrade (8)
Hull Upgrade (7)
Total: 200

How would you build a squad featuring “PS” ? (must use Fifth Brother gunner upgrade)

  • Pure Sabbac has two uses:
    • A scary thing to draw fire
    • A big stick to beat the enemy with if he doesn't draw fire.
  • If looking to invest in him, you presumably want him to survive, hence the latter option.
  • Since he isn't and can never be 'tough', I would recommend using him as a flanker.
  • Outmanoeuvre is brutally effective but expensive - It's not a bad call as it doesn't rely on you lining up a bullseye shot (not easy with initiative 4 and the striker's insanely high minimum speed). The other slightly cheaper option is Elusive - since you recover the charge on red moves, and the striker has an incredibly flexible red dial (once you stack ailerons on top), it's a nice pairing.
  • Whilst it's not a great pairing for 'engagement range' moves, getting Pure Sabbac into that flanking position in the first place is a lot easier with Afterburners. Without them, he's actually no faster than a normal TIE/ln in a dead run.

  • That's 65 points, leaving you 135 points to build something suitably threatening your opponent needs to point themselves at that, not at Pure Sabbac.
  • First off, Soontir feels really expensive. Because he's agility 3, those 2 extra hit points are costing you 15 points. That's a lot for trying to bulk up a ship.
  • If I wanted a tough 'anvil', My first thought is TIE defenders; you can pack a pair of Delta Squadron Pilots and pretty much engage an enemy head-on without too much fear of losing a ship, and the I1 can actually be a blessing since you're then not subject to the classic problem of defenders - having a predictable move blocked by a lower initiative pilot.

I'd recommend

  • Pure Sabbac
    • Elusive
    • Fifth Brother
    • Afterburners
  • Delta Squadron Pilot x 2

EDIT:

Sorry - just saw you said hyperspace!

In which case, I'd suggest a supporting TIE swarm:

  • Pure Sabbac
    • Outmanoeuvre
    • Fifth Brother
    • Afterburners
  • "Howlrunner"
    • Crack Shot
  • "Mauler" Mithel
    • Crack Shot
  • Gideon Hask
    • Crack Shot
  • "Wampa"

played 4 games today against republic aces with:

“Pure Sabacc” (44)
Outmaneuver (6)
Fifth Brother (9)
Shield Upgrade (6)

Major Vermeil (49)
Darth Vader (14)
Seventh Sister (9)

Soontir Fel (53)
Predator (2)
Shield Upgrade (8)

Total: 200

Outmaneuver is good vs. jedi and naboo, that SU on ”PS” can be crucial, imho trumps burners if you play patiently and be behind rocks with evade + force.

Major hits like a truck* and Elusive could be really good (those 1 sloop are 💖), Vermeil is so good, it balances “PS” as threat.

Next iteration will give Soontir burners to run away even stressed with a 5 forward boost or line up bulls eye after sloop:

“Pure Sabacc” (44)
Outmaneuver (6)
Fifth Brother (9)
Shield Upgrade (6)

Major Vermeil (49)
Darth Vader (14)
Seventh Sister (9)

Soontir Fel (53)
Predator (2)
Afterburners (6)

Total: 198

Super fun list with lots of tricks and maneuvering.

* will start a new thread with Vermeil on extended, paired with named Phantoms should be fun

EDIT- spelling is hard

Throw her in with 4 other I4's that are annoying when ignored.

5 x 4

(44) "Pure Sabacc" [TIE/sk Striker]
Points: 44

(30) Gideon Hask [TIE/ln Fighter]
Points: 30

(30) Seyn Marana [TIE/ln Fighter]
(1) Marksmanship
Points: 31

(38) Major Rhymer [TIE/sa Bomber]
(5) Cluster Missiles
(3) Seismic Charges
Points: 46

(49) Major Vermeil [TIE Reaper]
Points: 49

Total points: 200

You throw Gideon, Seyn and Rhymer up the middle, and pincer with Vermiel and Sabacc. Works for your initiative request.

I like to fly my strikers light, as they tend to crumple when a light breeze comes ther way. If you have to put Bro in the gunner seat, I'd roll with afterburners over shield (targeting computer when?).

Here's the thing with Supersoontir: it brings his threshold to 3 meaning you have to 'kill' a normal Soontir for half points, plus you can fly him a little more aggressively. Not a terrible points bank. That being said, when green dice betray you, they do so with a vengeance, so the extra HP can evaporate faster than morning dew in the desert.

PS with 5Bro and SU is kinda where it's at imo. He could also take an EPT - Predator would be my call, personally. I know making him a flanker is appealing, and flying him like that is wise - but I like to build him for sheer hurt.

That build leaves room for 4 TIEs headed up by Iden and Howlie - making your opponent's choices very tough. You could also ditch the other 2 TIEs and include Feroph with Vader for a bit of control/support.

Vermeil with Vader is always a BRUTAL option though - your opponent will also want to be taking him down ASAP. Feroph is similar, but less offensive. So yeah, PS as above and Vermeil with Vader is getting harsh for your opponent to choose and deal with. 2 Brocket Bombers fits in the leftover space.

This list makes target priority a real chore for your opponent. Send your Academy bro in aggressively to block, keep Vermeil and Wampa close on his heels, hang Maarek back a bit, use Sabacc to flank. It literally doesn't matter who they target first, there are enough dice and nasty tricks on your side of the table to swing any game.
