Fun fact, his rank was originally Captain, the same position held by Piett himself in the novelization and in the film itself (Star Destroyer Captain #1) but he was demoted 14 years later by the Decipher Star Wars Card Game when he was named Commander Gherant in 1997.

So heโ€™s useless in all depictions? ๐Ÿ˜‚

But Commander is a title used lots in Star Wars - like in ANH - Motti is called a Commander... I think it is something other than a rank.

Well, at least that explains what really happened to the Executor.

In a cunning maneuver Ackbar moved the fleet into range of the Executor, tricking the Executor into firing on a 'ship'...

As a result the Executor lost Commander Gherant's ability...

Which allowed Green Squadron to get a crit on it...

Which turned up a 'Shield Failure'...

And the rest is history.

Or (as Ackbar would put it) a trap.

And he needs a Vader officer on the same ship to fling him off

In the film Gherant is credited as "Stardestroyer Captain #1", and he's referred to as a "fleet captain" in the novelisation.

He could still have a rank of Commander, just following the tradition of the officer in charge of a ship being referred to as "captain" no matter what rank they hold. Or it could go the other way, with "commander" being a term for anyone in command of something.

Working out what rank he's supposed to have is a bit tricky as the Rank Plaques aren't consistent between the three films, and in RotJ all Imperial Officers have the same one.

He's probably the executors captain at the time while piett is the admiral of death squadron. I always got that feeling when watching that scene, especially since he asks about why the fleet is not attacking.
