Force is an action? and Crackshot questions for group

By Wayne Argabright, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Couple of rules questions for the group: I currently have an Evade token (ship is evading). I Roll ONE evade and one Blank. MY opponent rolls two Hits. He crack shots one of my evade dice.. Then says i cant use my Evade Token for reasons I still don't quite understand..lol If I have worded this wrong Devin Sassano let me know... Second question: Is using a force power considered an Action? suppose i am flying a Delta 7 which has a Purple Evade on its action bar. Can i take a normal action like a target lock and then spend a force token to evade? Thanks...

1. If your opponent has allowed you time to determine whether or not you were going to spend the evade before using crackshot and you chose not to, then you cannot retroactively decide to. For your example the evade token spend happens before crackshot triggers.

Other specific examples are if someone rolls one hit and their opponent rolls 1 evade and 2 eyeballs. If the defender chooses not to spend a force to make one an evade, his opponent can declare crackshot, there by cancelling the rolled evade and dealing one damage.

When I run crackshot I always make a point of asking my opponent if he wants to spend his tokens before declaring crackshot. Too often the player realizes they should be used that 1 force to have 2 evades(preventing me from using crackshot and potentially killing a ship).

2. Spending a force, using a force, etc are not actions. You can have actions where the cost is to spend an evade(like your example). In these situations the normal 1 action (unless linked) still applies. You could either lock or spend the force for an evade, not both.

Thanks... Yeah I declared that i was going to use both my evade and dice roll... However for most of the night i was totally abusing the Force by taking a normal action and then using my force power to evade...Doh....

However in a previous game i didn't notice that he was using Tie advanced prototype dials for a Tie advanced.. so we are even now..lol

It sounds as if you're not quite clear on how evade tokens work in 2.0. After you roll defence dice, you can spend an evade token to change one of your dice to an evade. It no longer adds an extra result, you have to spend it and can then flip one of your dice over to an evade result. After you've either done that or decided to hang onto the evade token (for a different attack or ability) is when Crack Shot triggers, just before results are tallied. Your opponent probably didn't realise you weren't clear on this and thought you were deciding to keep rather than use your evade token.

Also, just in case you were doing it differently, red dice should be rolled and modified first, before the green dice are rolled and modified. If you're defending, you should have full information of what is on the red dice when you roll/modify your defense dice. In this case, when you rolled your evade/blank, you should have already known that your opponent had rolled two hits.

If it makes it any easier, the Dice steps of Attack follow a Attacker/Defender, tick-tock pattern:

3.a.1 Attacker rolls Attack Dice

3.a.2. Defender modifies Attack Dice

3.a.3. Attacker modifies Attack Dice

3.b.1. Defender rolls Defense Dice

3.b.2. Attacker modifies Defense Dice

3.b.3. Defender modifies Defense Dice

4. Neutralize Results

Evade Tokens are spent at step 3.b.3, while Crack Shot take effect before step 4. It feels like 3.b.2, but the card specifies “Before the Neutralize Results step”.

Thanks for posting the reminder on how dice are rolled and modified so many people just drop dice and mod without thinking about that. It can really make a difference.

If it makes it any more easier, there is a quick reference at the back of the Core rule book that came with the core set, that outlines these steps, as well as what each action does, the game round phases, range bonus, and token types.
