Jyn Erso - now actually quite useful?!

By Zamalekite, in Star Wars: Armada

The text for Jyn Erso is as follows:

Quote

"When you reveal a command, you may discard a Icon Command Squadron dial or token and this card to choose 1 enemy ship at close range. If that ship has no raid tokens, it gains 2 raid tokens of your choice. If that ship has an objective token, you may also gain 1 victory token."

Before RitR there weren't that many situations where you could use the second part of her ability. e.g. with Capture the VIP you'd have to let your opponent capture the VIP in order to then try and get points back from it. Blockade Run - you'd have to be first player and hope your opponent had Blockade Run to pick it.

With RitR there are now several objectives that assign objective tokens to first player ships that you can score points from - and there are such objectives in each category:

Assault Objectives

Ion Storm - Objective tokens assigned when 1st player is beyond distance 1 of an obstacle - 15 points each.

Marked for Destruction - you can assign objective tokens to enemy ships with a critical effect at close-medium range - 15 points each.

Rift Assault - "While a ship is attacking a ship, if the defender is beyond distance 1 of any obstacles and the defender does not have an objective token, the attacker can spend 1 die with any icon to assign an objective token to the defender" - 10 points

Defence Objectives

Fleet in Being - "After deploying fleets, the first player assigns each of their ships 1 objective token" - 15 points

Navigation Objectives

Hyperspace Migration - if you end the round within distance 1 of a Purgill you gain 1 objective token - 20 points.

So it's quite possible to stick Jyn on a Hammerhead and use her to nab at least one victory token. A Profundity drop probably the easiest and safest way to do this. If dropped out of harms way you could even stalk a ship and get the points more than once.

If you didn’t have to discard her.

It’s definitely a pretty nice bonus, but she’s still competing with Cham and Boarding Troopers, which can turn the tide of a game in a way 2 anticipated raid tokens... usually can’t? Plus you’re building your fleet to seriously benefit from a set of objectives that fill pretty specialized niches. Ion Storm in particular looks to favor ranged gunlines, which don’t often use boarding teams. I’d still throw her in to a list for fun, but competitively there are almost certainly better things to be doing.

I think they have some synergy together as Rex wants to pile on the tokens quickly so his effect is more effective(I need better vocabulary). Jyn helps him pile on a burst of tokens and he continues hindering that ship if he stays at distance 1-3. As for a delivery ship, probably the MC75 works best to carry them both and to stay alive

If you take one bad card, and add another bad card, they cannot (normally) become good 😁 .

I've thought about a Profundity drop of:

Torpedo Hammerhead
Garels Honor
Capn Rex
Jyn Erso
Adv Proton Torps.

It's cheap, deploys behind dangerous front arcs, gives initial damage of 1-2 crits through shields, and has a lasting impact to command ships and carriers.

For SSD, ISD, and Hardshell Pickles; it makes Raddus's call at Scarif seem reasonable (can't fix the Physics though).

But if you take sensor teams and ADD enhanced armament you get a great combo!

Just go with Cham Syndulla instead and get a more lasting impact against almost any Command 3+ ship.

Jyn is a disappointment in game so far which is too bad because I like the character.

One of the things to consider is Raid and stack munipulation attack different elements of the games ship resource system. Raid attacks the resource managment of your ship. Getting you to spend command tokens or dials to remove. It also gets in the way of cards generating extra cmd dials (Thrawn, Piett, and Pursuant).

We now have enough strong tools in the raid catigory a player can build a list and discover how they are going to take advantage of the stumble the resource draining causes. Seems like a nice space for a close combat ship heavy aggro list to shine.

Except of course, all the ways people are now taking in order to *counter* Cham and Slicer Tools (Support Officers, SFOs, even the odd Wing Commander), are of course, useless against Jyn's type of Control. Making her a potentially strong meta choice for people... Kind of like ECM vs EWS... They're both good at their own thing with little overlap.
