It's persistent myth that producing things outside of China is ruinously expensive. We're paying $30 for a box of 7 plastic guys. If you don't think there's an awful lot of wiggle room in that pricing I got a bridge to sell you. The Rendra factory in the UK produces "hard" plastic models of higher quality than Legion for a fraction of the cost. Even accounting for licensing fees and scale differences, Legion could keep costs competitive and make them in not-China. Whether or not they have the cash up front to make a big switch and invest in a bunch of new machines and stuff is another story!
Personally I'm surprised that making them in China hasn't already resulted in Legion knock-offs cropping up all over web.
I spent over 5 years in a plastics company. the markup is just crazy. For example a 55 gallon brute can sells for well over $100. It costs less than $15 to make even including all of the overhead costs such as resin, electricity and labor. Yes, they could sell the $55 gallon brute cans on the shelves for $15 and still make enough profit to keep running with money left to reinvest in the company for improvements. Your not paying for what it costs to make, your paying what they company thinks it can get.
