A new teaser for The Rise Of Skywalker was just released and at 1:21 we see the biggest group of ISDs ever on film. Also a scene prior we finally see some resistance B and Y wings and a CR90!

1:27 has some superlaser, might be the Onager.

And 1:46 is just, well… (I guess it is some vision and not real)

The pessimist in me feels they are probably just going to grab the storyline of the Katana fleet from Heir to the Empire, and change it into IDS's. The Resistance must get there before the First Order so they have a massive fleet to fight them. They sure as **** better be droid ships like the Katana fleet, as all those ISD's would take several million crew to man them all, at 30-something thousand each.

What I really want is an Imperial Remnant force led by an aging Thrawn come to save the Resistance.

Perhaps REALLY what you want is that they just made the thrawn trilogy the sequels and not the sequel plot we have right now.

I know I want my fanfiction where Grand Admiral Thrawn and I go off to save Papa Smurf from the evils of the Rebellion, because I read a book about him once.

We didn’t need the thrawn books to be put on screen. BUT vii had the wrong premise from the start. The resistance should’ve been the new republic. Being a separate entity made little to no sense. Just a cop out on the writers part because they don’t know how to write a story where the good guys aren’t the under dogs.

The book Bloodline explains why this is but, like so many other things in the sequel trilogy, we shouldn't need multiple other sources for the movies to make sense.

In terms of galactic warfare that's laughably small, the FO didn't show its true military presence until after the entire republic, and their cherished fleet, was atomized.

I'm sorry but calling it bad writing or a "cop out" is what doesn't make sense. After some 37 years of galactic strife, from the invasion of Theed to the Battle of Jakku, I think it makes PERFECT sense that a new unified government would be wary of creating separatists by over militarizing. It made less sense to me that the old EU was like, "Hey guys, you know how the Republic ended up creating an authoritarian regime that brutally oppressed the entire galaxy for several decades? Let's rebuild that ****"

They were foolish to ignore the threat of the FO, but I don't think they had much of choice about demilitarization when it came to trying to reform a central republic, too many individual systems were afraid of the events of the empire would repeat itself.

A core-centric government that doesn’t care about its outlying citizens being enslaved, killed or outright brainwashed against them isn’t a government worth fighting for. Every FO Stormtrooper abducted from birth is a failure of the New Republic. We’ll see just how many there are soon enough, but I’ll bet it’s a lot.

That’s fine. But the resistance is hardly a massive militarized force the rest of the galaxy is wary of. All our characters could’ve operated as new republic characters. The distinction between new republic and resistance is just puzzling. The new republic could’ve and should’ve been like pre ww2 France. Demilitarized like you envision but still a world power that through either antiquated tactics or military philosophy stumbles in its first encounters with the fo. (Thrawn would’ve been great for this) but maybe a smaller, yet more skilled fo hits hard and fast using tactics the new republic has difficulty adapting too (thrawn superior tactics, or draw upon kotor and the ruthlessness of the mandalorians etc) and then the new republic has to adapt and counter the fo in unconventional ways (maybe denying the fo access to hyperspace fuel to cut their offensive short, or maybe a manpower shortage depleted the fo’s infantry capacity ala the reliance on mind controlled stormtroopers). There are plenty of ways we could’ve still had tension and struggle for our characters without them being shoe-horned into the underdog role via a lazy rewriting of Anh. The premise of vii is flawed and it unfortunately permeates and compounds into viii. As I’ve stated before many of viii’s problems stem from vii.

For those who have read up on the canon - part of the problem is, essentially, HALF of the New Republic Senate - and their Worlds - just joined the FO. Straight up.

That gave them quite a support base.

It’s stated fairly strongly that’s the outcome in “Bloodlines”, by Claudia Grey. Since it’s the reason Leia forms the resistance

My assumption is that the fleet of ISDs is the Imperial Fleet lying in ambush prior to the Rebel attack in Return of the Jedi.

After seeing the wreckage of Death Star 2, which means we are on Endor, and the inclusion of the Emperor, and the fact that Rey is still in the same clothes I can only surmise that JJ is trying to tie all of the films together in a neat bow for the finale.

that was a plan, a strategy, not a fact. There was no actual joining 6 years before TFA.

That’s the sense I got of the galaxy in TFA as well. A small splinter faction on the edge of known space...

I think that was intentionally misleading. After all, we were seeing this new political landscape for the first time in TFA. In a way the viewer really knew just about as much as the Republic or Resistance. The First Order was a militarized faction that terrorized border systems with what appears to be a small number of ships and advanced tech. Then, as the story progresses, over the events of TFA BF II and TLJ we learn along side the protagonists that they weren't just a splinter of the old empire but an entire faction, hidden deep in unknown space.

I prefer this method of conveyance. (Not just in movies but other media as well.)

Egoraptor did a video about how crap the conveyance is in video games today compared with some of the earlier games (like megaman X). I think the same can be said for other mediums as well. If you have a "Yeah, I GET IT". moment in a movie or game, they've failed at using a natural method of conveying that idea.

Let's just all agree that the new trilogy is a rather stupid and sometimes confusing refilming of the OT.

By the way, I wonder how much ILM asked for that shot. All tehy had to do is copy/paste the star destroyer a couple hundred times. I bet it was at least a few hundred thousand dollars :D

Agreed they don’t need to beat us over the head with it. That said we should be able to discern what is is going on with the source medium. Some people don’t own an Xbox so they aren’t going to get what they need to know from playing swbf 2. Some of us haven’t read xyz books. So that’s a failure all in its own.

**** even the prequels managed to world build and convey the state of galactic affairs surprisingly well. Given the stated confusion over tfo, the resistance, the new republic... Disney/the writers/the directors can and should do better.
