Ion Storm

By LTD, in Star Wars: Armada

I'm looking for a RED objective that goes well with my preferred list / style of play (Corvettes with ETs and TRCs).

I was thinking that the new ION STORM objective would be good as a way of earning points from big ships (like the SSD). The TRCs allow a face to be turned to a crit, so it is kind of a guaranteed points gain from every ship - so 60 to 75 points earned each turn.

But looking at in Vassal, I can't see a way to place the obstacles so that the SSD isn't automatically in range 1 of an obstacle at the end of first movement at speed 2.

And if SSDs really do have Damage Control Officers stapled to them, that means that the special critical effect won't happen either.

Has anyone experimented with this objective? Perhaps if all the obstacles are placed on one side (right or left) of the map, and then I deploy on the other side - the enemy can then either take a 5/6 loss (I'm second player) or fly out to meet me in the Ion Storm - of course, then I'm just as vulnerable to the effect, since the Obstacles are somewhere else...

Of do I put half the objectives on one side and half on the other, leaving the center clear, then deploy the fleet to force them to come across to me?

Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

That's a tough one. The best I can think of is adding a disincentive for going near the obstacles, like mines and Ezra. If you have 2 GR-75s in the list you could have 2 Proximity Mines upgrades, Sabine Wren, Ezra. Put mines on top of the obstacles (as a bonus, they're obstructed) and have fun with Ezra whenever you want. Costs 16 points though.

You have a bunch of blockade runners with engine techs. Pick Blockade Run

Interesting. On the one hand, flying corvettes down the teeth of an SSD on a 3’ wide board feels a little suicidal. On the other, if you get around behind it, can even a JJ SSD even turn around on that narrow a field?

I’m not keen on blockade run for a variety of reasons - I could get at most 80 points, and I likely lose a ship (or two) so I’m at 40 points (or 0) (or worse).

Ion Storm gives the possibility of farming big things without killing them.

Of course, there’s alway opening salvo for the late game ram ...
